Try another key before you do anything else. The keys MB makes and sells for these cars are JUNK. I always make sure I keep a working, spare key in the center console of all of my cars built after '98.

Most likely a faulty steering lock, possibly a bad EIS. Anyone with an MB SDS can diagnose it in about ten minutes. There's an excellent guided test that will pinpoint the problem in no time.
