FWD car cv joint assemblies

I am finding it incredibly difficult to purchase just the end piece of the camry I own, I dont want to buy a reman or a claimed new axle from a store as I know they would not be long lasting and mostly would have cheap or wrong and low grease charge in them, (seen one like that where it seemed that they installed wax instead of grease) new OE items are near 400 dollars a side.

I could only find one brand that just sell the outer kit but that too on amazon and sears only.

Anyone here able to just buy the outer CV joints from a good brand like GKN, 555 or similar?

i'm lucky in that I have a rebuilder in town who's been doing it since day 1. he gets all mine, including Toyotas. only 1's he CAN'T do, not won't, are the crimptype on the mbs that required the 700 usd tool to seal the boot. i'd look in your area and be prepared to give up the car for a day. good work isn't fast. my guy when he's slow, can do a pair of axles in about 3 hours. busy-next day.

buying just a joint has gone out of sight. too many cheap news and remans out there. good luck, chuck.

I have visited about 3 rebuilders who dont actually renew the joints but more fill and grind them and repair with old cages from cores. Not my liking.

What brand does your rebuilder use?

In another country I used to live the regular way I redid CV axles was new joint, good/best quality/correct type of grease, a line of glue on boot ends and good crimp on the bands.

The jobs lasted a very long time, I want to do a similar type of work here but its seeming pretty hard.

Did you try the Toyota dealer? In days gone by I was able to get outer joints from a VW dealer at good cost.

he does what you don't want done. checks the wear, grinds them out, uses new cages and balls that are oversize. best he offers. had a 124 4matic that got 2 ft. axles from him and they are still ok after 60k or so. i'd rather go used if i can't use him, compared to the other stuff out there. good luck, chuck.

Zulfi, it's just a Camry. Throw the reman in and be done with it. Put your time and TLC into a car that deserves the attention.

And that is what rebuilt is.

The Op needs to check the dealer for joints / factory reman axle / new axle. Some dealer stuff is priced well enough that chasing used isn't worth it, not sure in this case.

I have walked down the reman axle path on another japanese origin car, I was not entertained by the fact that a reman axle with completely sealed boot was clicking after 5,000 miles and I had to wrestle it out again.

Yes, its a camry, more like an appliance rather than a car, I drive to appreciate my benz more - driving the benz after a week of driving the camry makes you realize what quality driving is about.

however I have took out the axle, and removed the outer cv to check it (its shot but I measured it), I am going to buy the outer kit from amazon, matched with dimension and design. Its a car built on a the 1997-2001 camry/celica/gracia - so uses the camry hubs.

36 bucks - not bad IMO. This way I get to use the genuine shaft and inner tulip driver that fits to the transaxle.

toyota want about 400 dollars a side for my application, they do not sell rebuilts for this model as it is a one year only car, 2002 camry solara 2.4 - old body style with the 2.4 2AZ-FE engine and the electric shift partial lockup transmission. (Only oddball difference in axles being the shaft length)

I thought of buying a toyota rebuilt shaft for an older model and dismantle it, but abandoned it as its too long to wait and then play with black grease so I thought of buying a new outer joint.

The toyota rebuilt axle actually has a new outer joint on it, they just reclaim the shaft and the inner if its usable (which it usually is)

in toyota's genius move they decided its best to sell a CV with shaft as one assembly, which is stupid - the outer cv is just like all other items with the circlip to lock it to the shaft.

if you found an outer cv joint for 36, that's waaaay too cheap for a quality part. if it's for a boot kit, that's too high. got a link? wanna look. thanks, chuck.

Its not any brand I know, Im used to buying, 555, GKN and union.

In other countries where I lived, good replacement joints were priced similarly too, 35-60 dollars depending on vehicle.

never heard of them. nor had I ever sold a gkn joint for the money you suggest. it's been 20 years or so, but I thought gkns were closer to 100. and I sold a lot of them for vw rabbits, Renault r5s, lotsa fwd cars. can't remember what we sold for Toyota, Subaru, etc.

febest may be ok, they say the right things about iso9000. 35 is awfully cheap. good luck, chuck.

I don't put much faith in ISO, it meas nothing when it comes to quality of the product. A company could be making lead life preservers and as long as they doccument standards and folow them, they will be ISO certified. And, if something goes out of spec, all you have to do is change the spec.

35 is pretty low but considering modern machining and China labor, it might be OK as in make the car move again.

I installed the kit. originally I was getting a wrong part but after removal of the axle I was able to measure and get the right thing.

So far so good, I did not use the grease tube they provided in the kit - its tiny - about 85 grams of grease at max, I used an old packet of black GKN CVJ grease I bought from this site. The inner tripod was original and just repacked with red wheel bearing grease

no clicking or jamming.
