Rattling, Knocking Noises 1998 C230 2.3
I just purchased a 1998 C230 2.3. When the weather is cold under 65 the car drives nice and not too much going on. As soon as it hits 70 and above when I make a RIGHT turn only I hear rattling/tapping and slight knocking noise. It does NOT do this on the other side. In the pic you will see that part of the Steering Center Drag Link seal that is connected to the lower control arm is cracked and I assume all the grease is out and its done for. This is the same side ( passenger side) that I hear the noise coming from. Would this cause the issue I described? Ive read elsewhere that wheel bearing could also be the culprit but I just cant be changing everything in this car. Any help is appreciated!!

Is the noise continuous throughout the turn? Does it have a constant frequency? The part in your photo is the tie rod end and usually those don't make any noise when they are worn. The symptom for worn tie rod ends is wandering on the especially when there are ruts in the road, FYI, the outer tie rod ends you can replace individually but the inners are integral to the link (which includes the outers also...)

Thank you for your response and that totally makes sense. Yes, it is constant throughout the turn when going right. It sounds a little grinding clunking. Any other ideas Perhaps?

Check for a worn wheel bearing. Jack up that wheel, grab at 12 and 6 then 3 and 9 and check for looseness/wiggling at the hub. Should be none. If you replace them you can get a tube of the fluorescent green wheel grease at the dealer.

In your other thread Jim Anderson said "The vacuum reservoir is located in the right fender behind the wheel. It might have come loose. Remove the plastic fender liner to get access to it." Have you checked that yet?
Anything I say is just a guess at this point. I know the motor mounts can sag in those. I suppose it is possible that has something to do with it. Hard to say without hearing it. A guy today told me one of our power supplies was humming and he thought it had a bad contactor but to me it was squealing so I thought bad capacitor...

Thank you for the help. I took everything apart, its not the vacuum reservoir. I took all the rotors and pads off. Cleaned everything. Greased caliper sliders. Still, the noise is there when I turn right. wobbling, clicking sound. Would motor mounts cause such a noise then?

Have a little update..But still no fix. Decided to listed with a stethoscope and cant pin point it. I though it was the belt tensioner in the beginning and changed that as I stated before. Still the same. Its coming from the water pump area I think but its hard to tell. SO...I Changed the water pump.noise still there. I took the belt off and the noise is gone. SOO...do alternators make clicking clunking sounds especially when you make a turn??? Thats the last thing I have left unless its the power steering pump which does not sound bad when I listen to it. Any thoughts?

Try adding a little PS fluid. You might be amazed. Unfortunately it is a special kind but you can buy a L for $25 I think or you could throw a TBS of the regular stuff.
