when going through my gears i get a sort of "PUSH" as if someone had rear-ended me. does anyone know what could be causing this to happen?

Have you checked your transmission fluid?
My '83 300SD shifts like this when it's low. |

Fluid level, a vacuum leak at the modulator cap or vac line comming from the intake manifold to the modulator...
