Oil capacity MB

Maybe a stupid question, but wondering. Did oilchange on a VW passat 2000mod 1.8l and its 3,5liter oil with filterchange. Then did the W202 1.8l and its 5,5l or 6l dont remember, why so much oil on these engines?
