It's a two section shaft with a flexible joint and support bearing midway. If you can't nudge the shaft aft far enough to replace the coupling, you'll have to drop the exhaust and heat shield so you can get to the midway support. It should be enough to detach the midway support but mind that the front and rear sections don't separate. For good measure, index the front and rear sections so they go back together in the same orientation. You can have driveline vibration if they're not reunited as they were balanced.

Sixto I am lucky in one respect , the silencer is clear, and not in the way on my 260e .But it did say to remove the gearbox support ,and to support the gear box . You have a centre bearing in the propshaft with 2 bolts holding the bracket to the bottom of the car .And all the information i can find is to remove all the propshaft. I am sure there is no need to remove all of it to replace just the front coupling ..Just thought some one had done this very same job.. Thank you for your reply ..

You will likely have to remove the gearbox crossmember and support the gearbox from below with a screw jack or something to hold it in place. Use a piece of plywood or something to keep from bending the pan.

On my SDL, removing the carrier bearing was enough to get the driveshaft enough movement to get the front flex disc out of the way. Will take a bit of wiggling, but you should be able to do it without pulling the entire DS.

Since you're down there anyway, consider replacing BOTH flex discs. The rear one is pretty easy and if it's the same age as the front one, it probably isn't in much better shape.

You can do it by dropping the center support bearing, loosen the center nut so the spline and slide freely then drop transmission X member while leaving the rear flex disk still attached. Both the transmission end and differential end have a long center bolt that sticks into the center of the flex disk so its crucial that you can slide the 2 halves of the DS closer together at the center support spline. Theres a bit of awkward brute force involved at this point.

If you have to put your mechanic right, then I suggest that you find someone else who actually has experience with MBZ.

There is also a plastic circular bearing in the yoke at either end of the drive shaft. These are what align the the DS yokes in the centre of the flex disks with the trans & differential pins in their yokes during installation. If you are not careful, you can get them well buggered during removal and installation of the DS, so be very careful.

On many MBZ series cars the exhaust and park brake cables do not have to be removed, even though MBZ advises to do so, but again, you need to be extremely careful, so I repeat: do it yourself or find a mechanic experienced with MBZ.
