Coming back to Mercedes? What do you guys see on this W124

I'm in the market for a used car as my son will soon start driving, and I will give him a hand me down civic I have been driving for the past couple of years.

I've owned in the past a 1984 300D, a 1984 300SD, and a 1995 E420. Oh yeah, almost forgot the 1982 240D I had briefly.

I'm open to gas or diesel, W123, W124, W126, or ???

I'm going to go look at this 1991 tomorrow. Do you guys see anything glaring from the photos?

Thanks. I've missed you guys!

Wow nice looking coupe. Like to have one myself.

As you no doubt already know, the w124's and especially the 300 series are very solid cars. But, at 28 years old, you might want to have an independent shop specializing in MB's take a look if you're really serious.

Were you going to ask for receipts/invoices to back up the claim of alot of new parts? The Autocheck is probably worth spending $10.

Was this car going to be your daily driver?

I googled the VIN. This car has been listed elsewhere at higher prices:

1991 W124 Mercedes 300 Ce White Calif. Car - Used Mercedes-benz 300-series for sale in Arcadia, California | autoquid.com

1991 W124 MERCEDES 300 CE WHITE for sale: photos, technical specifications, description

1991 Mercedes 300CE Coupe Classic

It looks to have been getting flipped around for a while. One listing says the mileage is unknown, and other listing shows it with 300,000 miles:

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300CE Automatic 6 Cylinder NO RESERVE for sale - Mercedes-Benz 300-Series 1991 for sale in Orange, California, United States

What’s up with the seatbelts? And why is the radio pulled halfway out?

Peeling clear indicates a respray. 1991 white would be single stage.

Great job guys!

The write up from this link I've seen many times from an auction company on Ebay. They always list donated cars.

Just started the looking process and I am in no hurry at all. I have about a year to find something.

The only negative thing I have heard about the 124 cars is a tendency to form rust where the front struts mount to the body. If this one has lived in CA all its life, then this should not be a problem.

RE the post about the paint: If you want to repaint single stage, you will need to have it done outside CA. That silly CA law banning single stage makes no sense - most places that work with single stage use the same paint booths that are used for 2 stage, so nothing goes into the atmosphere anyway. And to fix single stage with 2 stage is cheesy - the clear-coat inevitably peals off and in the end looks like hell.

Thanks again guys. I actually am passing on this one before even looking at it in person. I don't like the color combo and I was turned off by the auction sale earlier. I will start a new Looking to buy post soon.

I see you've experienced "old" and more "modern" Mercedes design. There's a big difference in pace and feel between W123s and W124s / W201s - which did you prefer?

Sounds like focus on the "old" or "modern" (but not both) might help

I loved all of my previous Mercedes' that are in my signature. I don't like the looks of the W201, but I've never driven one. The W123's and W126's are my favorites. All the talk about the CDI's on this board have peaked my interest, so I may look into the 2005/2006 turbodiesels as well.

A 201 rides pretty much like an S-class, but handles in a much more sporting manner. The five-link rear suspension was state-of-the-art when the 201 was introduced and still is, 35 years later, and the Mercedes engineers really knew how to select spring and damping rates. The front has about the same room as a 124, but the backseat is a bit tight for adults and the trunk is smaller.

I've always thought that the 201 is the best looking Merc sedan, but I'm probably biased because I owned both an '84 2.3 and my current '88 2.6 five-speed, and I've always driven only sports cars and small sport sedans.

You definitely want the 2.6. It's still a little torque shy, but is silky-smooth and loves to rev. After removing the R16/1 resistor to make the spark advance map more aggressive for more low end torque, fifth is useable down to about 35 MPH vs. 45 with the original 750K ohm resistor. Also, fuel economy around town improved from low twenties to mid twenties because I can upshift at about 2000 and highway mileage is improved from high 20s to about 30 in the 65-70 MPH range.

You should check one out, but good ones with low mileage are tough to find. Most have been beat into the ground at this point in time.

I've attached a recent photo. It has Euro headlamps and 6.5" wide 300E wheels with 205/55ZR-15 Dunlop Sport 2000 tires. Since they are about 18 years old, my plan is to replace them with 205/60s, specifically the Vredestein Sportrac 5 summer high performance tire, but am having a helluva time finding any.

Virtually all current 205/60R-15 tires are "all-season" with a lot of tread siping (for snow traction) and wear ratings of 500 or more. The Sportrac 5 has a wear rating of only 300, so it's stickier, and since I live in CA and rarely even drive in rain, a summer high performance tire that offers best performance in mild temperatures, both dry and wet, is the best choice for my driving conditions.

Not to side track but I also have the Sportrac 5 (on my Golf Mk7) and they are also excellent in the wet as long as the temp is 45 or higher. In fact. I bought them because they were rated so well by the ADAC for wet and dry.

Good luck on your search! I just sold my w124 and am on the look out for a w114!

Thanks Duke. I'm embarrassed to say that I've been out of the Mercedes game for so long that this whole time I was thinking the W201 was the body of the late 90's E-class cars. Your car is beautiful!

Also, I don't mind the sidetrack because I'm also considering other cars such as a Lexus LS.

I've always lusted after a 1999 S420 or 500 without the self leveling, and am now even considering a late 90's SL.

So.....keep the comments coming. I love it. You guys are the best.
