W210 wagon lift cylinder access

I have 2001 W210 wagon. The right side tailgate hatch lift cylinder/shock squeaks/squeals upon opening. They work as designed. I want to lube something. Can't stand the noise. Do you pry the interior side roof panel loose for access? TIA.

Raymond, Thanks, but that is for removing the tailgate. That I don't need to do. I need to know about the interior panel on each side of the headliner. There is a oblong section felt covered panel that I guess covers the lift gate shocks. Do you just pry it loose for access? TIA

You know it’s the cylinder that squeaks, not the hinge? Maybe squirt lithium grease liberally into the hinge area first.

Getting to the cylinder is a PITA. Remove the seat belt anchor, remove the roller blind divider hook, pry off the headliner trim that goes across upper hatch opening sill, pry off the headliner trim that follows the cargo area side window down to the side panel. Putting that last piece back requires pushing the piece in two directions at the same time to get all the tabs and clips seated.

The cylinder rod is shrouded in a rubber boot so it has to come off for cleaning and lubricating. It’s held with the same style clips as the hood supports.

Don’t forget to set the hatch on a ladder or similar support if/when you detach the cylinder. One won’t hold the hatch up.

I have to walk back some of that. I’m at a ‘01 wagon at the pick-n-pull and it’s different from my ‘98. The trim across the top of the hatch opening doesn’t have to come off, neither do the seatbelt anchors. The side trim looks like two pieces (and should be!) but the pillar pieces are inseparably fused to the upper pieces. There are T-20(?) head screws holding the roller blind track to the pillar that look like they have to come off.

You might have sufficient access just lowering the side piece. There’s a nylon strap not in my ‘98 that limits how much you can move the side trim. Looks like you can remove the aft attachment of the nylon strap. The forward attachment is deeper under the headliner.

Mind the side airbag cylinder!
