W210 wagon lift cylinder access

I have 2001 W210 wagon. The right side tailgate hatch lift cylinder/shock squeaks/squeals upon opening. They work as designed. I want to lube something. Can't stand the noise. Do you pry the interior side roof panel loose for access? TIA.
