1987 300E Engine periodically will not start

This message is for Donnie:

We have a 1987 300E. The car seems to run OK most of the time, but occasionally it won't start again after being idle for several hours. This has happened twice within the last two weeks. The last time was last night. The car had to be towed home - where it sits now.

When trying to start the car this morning, it seemed like it was trying to start, but wouldn't. I thought it might be a clogged fuel line filter or fuel pump that is causing the problem. The car has about a half tank of gasoline in it at the moment. Any suggestions?
