W108 280se 3.5 manual conversion questions
Hello all! New user here, two years ago I acquired by chance a 1971 280se 3.5 v8 imported from Germany in 1982. It is time for me to begin refreshing the engine, bay, suspension and other components so I can bring it back to roadworthiness and enjoy it! One thing that intrigued me was the thought of a manual conversion, I plan on putting lots of miles on it in the warm months and road trips as well as it should be, and having a 50 year old slush box underneath me makes me both bored and nervous. I’ve been told the 3.5 is a very happy motor compared to the 4.5, so the manual should bring out that character even more. I’m no stranger to manual conversions, I primarily play with classic BMW’s have have done engine and gearbox conversions before but these Mercedes’ cars are very new to me. Can anyone help identify what gearbox I should be seeking, which are the most reliable etc (I’ve been told the 4 speed) as well as whether or not there will be any wiring involved other than the normal reverse light wiring? Any input is appreciated!
