W123 300D Strange No Start Issue
Having a strange issue with my 1984 300D with a 4 speed manual swap. I did a manual crank window conversion on the car, and afterward drove the car with no issue to oreilly. Car started fine and drove fine with no issues. When I go to leave the store, the car would not crank whatsoever. Turn the key to run with no response. When the key is turned back to the off position and removed, all of the lights on the instrument cluster remain on; blinker lights, battery light, brake pad wear light, seatbelt light. Have to remove battery cable to get them to turn off. The only change is when the key is turned from "off" to "run", the battery light turns off, and when switched back to "off" the light comes back on.
I figured it may be an issue with the ignition switch, so i installed a brand new one from Mercedes and the issue still remains. I've checked over the wiring and do not see anything out of place. Fuses all check out too. Battery also checks out. The ignition assembly itself appeared to also be in good shape, the wings on the back side were intact and it functioned fine. Again, the car makes not attempt to crank whatsoever. Pop started it to get home and has sat since. Any help on where to look or how to go about this would be greatly appreciated! |

sounds to me as if there is a short in the charging system or you have a stuck relay
inspect the wiring going into the alternator carefully if no damage, I would pull the glow plug relay and see if it will try to start |

there's a tab on the steering lock assembly that breaks off. the lock cyl engages the column lock which then engages the ignition switch. i had 1 like this this past summer. pull the ign. sw. and look for loose pot metal. this 1 needed the column lock assy., which is nla. had to go used. it is possible the lock cyl has broken like that but not likely.

Which relay would you check if it were you?

To update this it ended up being the engine ground strap. The one that goes from the transmission bell housing to the frame rail on the driver side. Replaced with one from junkyard, started right up no problem.

Nice! How did you diagnose that?
