New to the list. have a question ? 300E-24 and 300TE
Hi. New to Mercedes forum posting. Ive always loved 190E and Cosworths and the W124 models.
Thats my look. I like these models. Local guy has a 1991 Japan 300e-24 with 125,000 kms and also a 1990 300TE wagon from Japan with 200,000 kms. both not rusty. Both great plaid or pattern interiors. Both came up in discussion yesterday for sale for $6000 CDN for the pair. Both Blue exterior. I've personally never had a Mercedes (wife has a GLK) but I do love the old SLs and the Hammer and AMG look W124s. 300TEs and 300Es seem to be all over the place, with Bring a Trailer Killing it for clean looking examples. Should I pull the trigger or am I setting myself up for a world of hurt. I guess I figured Id buy both, and clean them up to my high presentation where I like my cars to be, and then see which one I like driving the most----passing along the one I like the least. Or I like them both and keep them both. Not going to post a lot of pictures here yet. |

welcome aboard!
this board runs a bit slower of late but is more subdued than most other forums i've seen. the 24 valve m104 motors are good and the w124 is a great chassis. get as many records as are available and a pre purchase inspection

I don’t know about canada, but there are plenty of thee in the US and if it’s not a 500e, then people sell for anywhere from $500-5000 it seems. A lot of car for the money I think. Might as well buy the best possible example(s) you can find bc the repair bills will top purchase price in short order regardless of what you buy.

Welcome!
What matters is how you like them. Nowadays the dynamics are definitely dated but I for one love the mechanical feel they have. The 3.0 six cylinders are some of the best examples but also relatively common so not as "collectible" if that is a consideration. The Bosch Jetronic mechanical electrical fuel injection system can be a bit challenging if they act up. Very primitive to no diagnostic systems and both electronic and mechanical stuff to check on and adjust. And some of the electronic bits can be a bit pricey. The 24v version EZL module comes up a lot in discussions as an expensive and sometimes hard to find part if it fails, at least during the time I was looking at these cars. I personally dont like the gray interior as they can turn yellowish at high wear areas like the door pulls over time. Suspension is fairly straightforward with a few parts that can be expensive if you get new like steering gearboxes and rear SLS struts on the wagon. Oh, and I noticed some parts are becoming NLA lately but you can still get most of what you need. But if you like the cars and are mechanically inclined, you should be fine for the most part. |
