sunroof lube substitute

I've got some of the MB special sunroof lube (small quantity from a tech. friend) and used it now. However, before this fortuitous gift, I used Radio Shack Professional Lube Gel with Syncolon [PTFE (teflon)] and it worked just fine. Now, being able to compare the two, they seem to be the same stuff (although the MB lube is probably more silicone than PTFE). YMMV, but this has been a safe alternative for me versus $52 MB tubs. Try it at your discretion [DON'T use any petroleum based lubes (like lithium grease) as they seem to gunk up and deteriorate the felt slider pads]. FWIW

I've been using a wax based bicycle chain lube on the slider rails for several years with fine results. It's water based and intended to dry out after depositing the wax where it needs to go. Because it's somewhat water soluble it needs to be applied more frequently, but otherwise works fine. BTW, I find it lousy for bicycle chains - it simply isn't slippery enough and I always have problems with chains jumping, unintended shifting, etc. Perhaps this is why I'm always looking for alternative uses of this stuff...

Bought it ($3.00) and tried it. It seems to work well. Time will tell.

In my search for some of this stuff I found that VW / Audi have a similar, if not the same, product. Considering their sunroofs are also made by Webasto I figured it was worth a try.

Part number G00045002. No dealer will have this in stock because they just spray in silicone instead

Cost is under $30 for a 90 gram tube.

Looks like Pellican can order it for you

I put some on the tracks and seal of my W126 this morning and can't believe the difference. Sunroof is smooth and quiet, and doesn't bind when going from sliding back to tilting up. The paste is not messy at all. Remember it's important to lubricate the seal as well as the track, I think this is why a lot of the tilt and slide sunroofs have trouble: The sunroof binds on the seal requiring a lot of force to go from tilt to slid back.

How often is a fresh lubing required? I need to get some lube and treat my cars. The only one that I did it to was my manual sunroof on the TD I just got rid of.

I'd say once a year. My seal hadn't been treated in a while so it soaked up quite a bit.

The seal on my W124 had shrunk, and I promptly refused to use it until I installed a new seal and lubed the roof properly.

I have some genuine Gleitpaste sunroof lubricant from MB, I can sell 10mL of it loaded in a curved-tip syringe for easy application, for $19 including shipping.
