Can't get in - HELP (please...)
Hi
I am desparate and need urgent help, please? I have just bought a 1980 300SD and now cannot get into the car (which is blocking my friends driveway!). Have called 24hr auto locksmiths but no reply! Have tried a bent coat hanger down the side of the window but have no idea of what I'm trying to grab. Seems the vacuum has failed to all locks incl. trunk. Short of breaking window, can anyone please advise me how I can get into my car. Thanks to anyone who can help... Pete S. (Hobe Sound, Florida). |

If lack of keys are the problem, MB is getting them nearly over night now days from the chassis number.

Around here the cab companies have slim jims... if that will unlock your car...

Vacuum is unecessary to get in the car if the key works. Either front door will open with the key whether you have vacuum or not.

Thanks to all you guys who came back with words of help. Learnt something (vac not needed for front doors to open, so the locks must be busted - will replace). In the end I managed to get the "24 hour" locksmith whose hours are 8 am - 6 pm ( ) who used a slim jim, a wooden wedge and a piece of bent eighth inch dia wire to lift the door pin. $50 later, I was driving my 'new' pride and joy!
Don't ya luv 'em? Thanks again.... Pete S |

Did you just purchase your "new" pride and joy? Perhaps the ignition has been changed and now has a different key, and you only received the key for the ignition. Does your key even turn in the locks? I can't imagine all three (doors and trunk) going bad at the same exact time.

An 80 model 116 chassis had the first "laser cut" keys. They were the small ones and failed regularly. If you have a regular style key the ignition tumbler has probably been replaced with a workshop version (comes uncoded with key- old style key). If thats the case the door keys probably still work with the original laser cut that can be ordered through your dealer
If a new laser works the doors a coded ignition tumbler can be had in the same code.

A follow-up question:
If door locks didn't work, how did you lock your car?

Speaking of keys....
I have one key that came with my Benz, just curious as to how much another key would cost. I don't need the valet key but a spare one would be nice to have around.

OOPS, almost forgot, '91 300SE, I assume it's a laser cut key.

Bruce, go to your nearest stealer, bring your registration, license and about $28.00 US per key. They'll have them shipped direct from Germany in 3 days or less. Fresh cut from the master files.

Damn
I paid $28 and mine came from Baltimore overnight?! I got ripped off I think. Damn US keys.
I was also told to never use the spare on a regular basis, for it will mess up your door locks. (brass instead of steel?) This is the reason I had an original made, because I was using the spare. (only key I had)
