'88 300CE check engine light

I removed my instrument cluster today to replace a burnt bulb and as I was putting it back in I discovered the bulb was missing for the C E light. Not having a spare bulb I removed the washer fluid warning bulb and put it in the C E socket , when I started the car the light stayed on and even after starting it a few times it still stays on. I replaced the O2 sensor in October to pass emissions testing and the car seems to run fine still. Does the light need to be reset or might I have other problems. As far as I could tell from the manual only the O2 sensor will cause the light to come on.Thanks in advance for your help.

Only California version cars(1988 & later 300E's) had faults that could turn on the check engine lamp other than the O2 sensor. However if the overvoltage relay is defective the light will stay on BUT the car will be hard to start when it is cold.

DTCs for your car . . . .

Kyle, here's a summary of the DTCs for your car:

1 No fault found
2 Throttle position switch - wide open fault
3 Engine coolant temperature sensor
4 Air flow sensor position indicator
5 Oxygen sensor
6 Not used
7 TD-signal (rpm)
8 Altitude correction capsule
9 Electronic hydralic actuator (EHA)
10 Throttle position switch - closed position fault (idle)
12 Exhaust gas recirculation temperature sensor

As you can see, there's a number of 'goodies' that can go bad and light the CE light!

I just checked the 10 amp fuse on the OVP relay and it's good but the schematic shows it as not part of the light circuit anyways so I'm back to square one. I don't want to remove the cover to check inside without some 'been there done that' advice.Anyone?

Use the . . .

Diagnostic Connector to read the stored DTCs.

Press the black pushbutton down for a few seconds (3-4) and count the number of flashes. Menu #2 on my page ('www' icon below) explains more details for what's happening.

No problem, just trying to . . . .

see that you can read the DTCs.

Since you have the "CD", the codes are probably under the "CIS" system diagnostic section. I have the All-Data CD ROM: most everything is there but it's not easy to find.

Probably worth your time to browse through it. Let us know what you find.

Hi Jim,I don't know if there's a problem with my CD or if it's a cruel joke by MB,but I can't open the KE electronic diagnosis file.It opens and says it's done but the page is transparent .The file is @ :\Program\Engine\103\07.3-0121.pdf.It's in the combustion manual on the 124 CD.It's an official MB CD also so I'm not sure if they are all like that or not.The info on your page is for the LH system which doesn't help me but will that signal reader work on my system ? Thanks in advance.
