Question Anyone

Does anyone in the Phila area have the Harmonic Balancer holding tool? I want to rent it for a few dollars. I was going to buy it, but the chances of using it more then once on the same car is remote.. At least you can make a few bucks on it.. It should take no more then a hour to do the job..

Peter

Thumbs up Re: Balancer Failure

just a quick note to say thanks to everyone here. I just took my baby (~54K) in to be serviced and had the HB changed even though it was difficult to tell if it was cracking or not. The part itself was $75 from my indep guy. The labor a little more.

I just recently discovered that my '96 C220 had a safety recall (96V058000) to replace the engine balancer and pully. Is this the same issue? If so, how do I find out if my particular car had this recall work done?

Have your dealer run a VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) against your VIN number. If the recall was done at an authorized dealer it should appear on this printout. If not, unless you have a copy of the workorder where it was done your SOL.

A couple of questions:

Where do I look to find out what my engine number is?

My ML 320 has a production date of Feb 17, 2000 according to my service print outs with a VIN 4JGAB54EYA1769xx. Make Model is indicated as MB 163 ML320-K1. What does the 163 mean? K-1?Is there any way to tell if I may have the problem balancer part? I was unable to see any part number on the balancer, but I did not remove the belt.

At my last service, the dealer charged me $1.00 for a fuse element, 072581-000308. What is this?

Clayton

Read the 11th post down on this http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=63512&perpage=15&pagenumber=6 The photo shows the part number on the edge of the pulley. It helps if you pull off the engine cover to see it.

The 163 is the model/chassis type. You will see references here to W126, W123, W201 etc. These are the various models of MB's.

I just checked out our 2000 ML320:

Production date of 6/14/00 and it's harmonic balancer is 09-00. No indication on the vmi as to it's replacement. The only thing suspect was the front engine mount was replaced- said too weak on the vmi. I dunno.

Harmonic balancers

My 1999 E320 has 120K miles on it. Bought it used so don't know much about its maintenance. Checked the numbers on the pulley and they read as follow: 112-035-09-00. Is this a newer version? Most references have been for: 112-035-00-00.

Thanks,

Al

AEL.....

It's a newer version, but no knows if it will last. I had my H.B. replaced in Nov.2003 under warranty and by then the part # was 112-035-13-00. No one knows if this part will last, either! (2000 ML320, old part # 112-035-00-00)

This is one heck of a trend we are seeing.

If so, what was the outcome?
It did happen on my 85 190 8v coz' the priginal one is made out of all steel then the dealer replaced it with one with a rubber backing- the opne with the rubber backing failed. Asked the dealer about it -said I have some modification on the egine that the balancer can't stand it. So I went back to the all steel balacer w/o any rubber backing.

I was able to check the part number on my 2000 ML320 today and it was 112 035 08 00. My car had a production date of Feb 17 2000. I checked all my service orders and none mentioned any replacement part being installed.

cwhtrains......... sounds like you haven't got the bad one. With that said I would still keep an eye on it along with the ole power steering clamp and hose that was recalled a couple times. These world class Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks are full of surprises.
