Angry harmonic balancer failures

I reviewed the complaints on the NHSTA website for 1998 ML320, under "fanbelt/associated pulley failures". I realize that the balancer failure can be reported under other topics and it's not restricted to 98 ML320's. But for all of the complaints here, I CAN'T BELIEVE the complaint I filed with the NHSTA under the above category is one out of only 8 listed. That's pathetic guys if we expect NHSTA to encourage Mercedes to do anything. So if you have a 98 ML320 with the failure (or any other similar-engined model for that matter), and have not registered a complaint with the NHSTA, what on earth are you waiting for?

Dealer replaced crank pully with part no. 112-035-13-00 at Service B, approx. 40,000 miles. I did ask that they check that part.

Previously, different dealer replaced V belt at 35,000 miles, but said nothing about crank pully.

Must be all about the dealer?

I just came across this thread via a link on another forum.

For the record (and answer the question several posts back regarding existence of the problem on newer cars), my 2002 ML500's harmonic balancer was showing cracks and was replaced by the dealer during the first "B" service -- about 22,000 miles.

It had not yet progressed to any noticable symptoms -- they found it, not me. So either the dealer's service technician was especially observant, or MB is routinely checking all cars.

Was it the -00 part number, or a later one?

1999 E-320, 76K miles. My wife noticed a squeak that sounded a little bit like a belt or water pump. I looked at it the next day and the balancer was wobbling, rubber insert bulging out. I've complained at NHTSA and have the part in hand. I'm waiting for the balancer tool to hold it in place.

I'm impressed (not) with what I've found on the internet regarding M-B and this issue. I wish my wife didn't like the car as much as she does.

Hmmm....I thought 12-035-05-00 was supposed to be the only bad one.

itb76-- 112-035-00-00 is the bad one . I think that 2000 C280
was referring to his new part number from his invoice when he said 112-035-13-00 which is the lastest revision to the now infamous balancer

'98 E320, had the harmonic balancer go out last summer at 72,000 miles. Independent mechanic said he's seen plenty of them. Reported it on the NHTSB web site, got my fingers crossed for a recall. Still love the car, like it better than both the BMW 535 and 530 that I've owned in the past. Oh well, guess everything has it's price!

'99 ML320 Harmonic Balancer was gone about a year and a half ago with 56K miles, no extended warranty. It supposedly destroyed all the way from oil pan to timing chain cover. After heavy discussions with the dealer, they/MB took the bill for $2,800. I have to check my receipt to find out the part number they used when replaced.

'99 ML320: The part replaced on mine back in June 2002 was 112-035-08-00, so if the is the bad one is known to be 112-035-00-00 and the new one is 112-035-13-00, then it looks that there has been several revisions in-between which makes me think that the last one may not be 100% corrected. Hopefully if there is a re-call there will be a final new and improved design.

In the meanwhile, I was told that the HB should be marked with white paint and inspect regularly even for an insignificant sign of slipage. Does this makes any sense?

Thanks,

Rene

PS: I already filed the complaint.
