Your friend is lucky. The 230SL has a metal plate that holds the radio that can be removed. The glove box still needs to be removed, then the clock and heater blower switch. Remove the trim pieces that cover the lower part of the dash to access the two screws that hold the pannel. This should provide reasonable access to the switch area.
