My SRS Light came on about 2 months ago and is still on. Took it to my mechanic and he said that it was the crash sensor, $1200.

He said to not worry about it for the airbags will still inflate in a collision. Only Mercedes is not liable now if it does not go off since the light is on.

Does anyone know of anyone who had their airbag inflate in an accident even when their SRS light was on? Should I be worried from 1 - 10? 10 being very worried that they don't work.

Thanks.

I think your tech is wrong here. It is my understanding that when the light is "on" the system is inactive. Meaning, it will not react to a crash or anything else since it doesn't make decisions when it knows something is wrong.

I would have it retested by someone who understands the system better.

My SRS light is on also ('89 300E) and my MB dealer says the airbag will not work. I was told the SRS control unit was bad. I don't know if that is the same as the crash sensor but the price is the same.
Sellers of rebuilt control units do not sell these because of liability issues. Some salvage yards will sell you one...

thanks. the local dealer says that the "code" indicates that the crash sensor is bad and that I need a new one.. they know no more and no less. My personal mechanic insists that 90% of the time it will still work (proabably a voltage issue).

Either way, sounds like no way out of spending $1200 for the little gadget.
