Advance timing?

I advanced the timing a couple of degrees coz the "pickup" on acceleration was a little weak, the car would kinda spool up and REALLY start to accelerate around 1400rpm onwards.

There seems to be some improvement (seat-of-pants-meter).

I am running 98 octane so there's no pinking.

The timing was advanced by shifting the distributor body counter clockwise.

Does this really help?:p

Thumbs up Fuel mileage results are in!!!

I topped off the tank today having done 355km city driving and whaddaya know...39 litres!

That's like 9+km per litre!

Woohoo!

And I still have an oil/filter/plug change to do having done the FD swap!

I'm hoping after the tuneup, there will be an additional increase in fuel mileage (yeah right) but who knows...I was getting like 10 to 11km a litre before I started having problems with the FD!

Thanks stevebfl, arthur dalton, sbourg, cap'n carageous, and everyone who chipped in on this post.

Hopefully the information here will prove helpful for others with a similar predicament.

Cheers.

Hello Azhari,
congratulations,
your photos are beautiful and help a lot to anticipate difficult operations even if we do not open completely the fuel distributor.

If I understood correctly you swapped the old FD with a better one , which gives full satisfaction.

Are you going to open the old one for fun?

If yes could tell me if it is simple to change the small o-ring gasket on the inner cylinder were you mentionned the leak?
is the central nut on the bottom side easy to dismount / mount back?

Thanks for your comments.

Yep, now I'm gonna take the old one apart for the heck of it coz I think I see the fault...just wanna be sure...might learn something new.

I know it takes a rocket scientist to strip and PROPERLY re-assemble the FD; so a space cadet like me will likely screw it up beyond all hope...but I wanna know what goes on in there.:p

My old FD wasn't leaking, but I noticed the difference between the new and old one - I cannot see one of the four pinholes (hole which sprays the fuel) looking from the top of the FD.It seems obstructed.

I have PM from Cap'n Carageous with tips on how to take the FD apart!

I'll take a look and letcha know.

Cheers.

Well, the fuel mileage results are in :

1st tank since repair - 355km/39 litres (abt 9km/litre)
2nd tank - 395km/44km (abt 9km/litre)

My fuel mileage prior to the problem with the FD was 10 to 11km/litre so I will be working on the car to achieve that!

The old FD was taken apart but the particular nozzle on 1 of the 4 outlets (which appears blocked) is inaccessible from inside of the FD so looks like it cannot be repaired.

When I took the FD apart, the little o-rings inside were perfect, so were the o-rings for the EHA.

The plunger seal was not leaking, so I guess the problem was that one particular blocked vent which somehow screwed up the mixture and caused my car to run super-rich.

Anyway, I also learnt that my car has no CAT, and if it had one it would have been screwed up!

Cheers.

I checked mine this morning after running a tankfull and got 9.9 km/litre (23.1 MPG) even though it's running in open loop. I can live with that till I can get my electrical problems sorted out.!

You're running a little richer in open loop so I guess you're gonna get really good fuel mileage once you sort out the electrics and get the car back into closed loop.

We can bid adieu to smoking problems for now. :p

Cheers, cap'n.

Fuel Mileage

Topped the tank off for the 3rd time since the FD swap.

I had driven 486km when the fuel light came on.

At 496km, I reached a MOBIL station and filled it up...45 litres!!!

That's like 11km/litre!!!

Woohooooo!!!

My Baby's back!!!

You betcha'!

But this really gives new meaning to the phrase "running on fumes" - which my car seems to be!

Thumbs down Oh my God!

Old problem of running rich seems to have cropped up again!

The symptoms are slightly different this time.

Instead of a gradually deteriorating fuel mileage over a period of weeks, my fuel mileage went bad overnight!

When I last filled up my tank on Friday evening, the car had done close to 400km and needed 44 litres so gas mileage was about 9km/litre.My fuel mileage has been consistently around this figure since I swapped out my old FD for a used one.

By Saturday afternoon, having only driven for 50km, the fuel indicator was at the 3/4 mark!

I thought there may be a fault in the sender but in any case I decided to monitor the situation closely.

No clouds of black smoke on acceleration, no severe hestation on acceleration, etc at this point in time.

Checked the car for leaks but could not find any.

On Saturday evening, I noticed that when warm, there was a severe hesitation accelerating from standstill (a/c is on as always).Flooding maybe???

With the a/c off, the hesitation was gone.Looked at the exhaust and saw light black smoke at idle. When driving, I don't see any clouds of black smoke behind me like before.

Now as I type this message, the car has done 170km since the fill-up on Friday and the tank is almost at the 1/4 mark!

Looks like I'm gonna have to check out the car again but I wonder what would cause the fuel mileage to go bad really quick?

I will start with the basic stuff (clogged airfilter, coolant temp sensor, etc) and hope I get lucky.

I'll be damned if it's the fuel distributor that's foiled AGAIN!

Kinda same as before :

Runs good (with a/c) when cold, severe hesitation when warm.

Without a/c, runs well.Fuel mileage crappy, smoking black very lightly at idle but none noticed when accelerating.

Help!!!

By the way, I did an oil change on Saturday morning (oil/filter/plugs) 10W50 fully sunthetic oil coz it was due.

Don't know if it is related.

But I witnessed the oil change and also made sure they didn't overfill, etc.

Sigh...
