Well Benzmac, It gets worse. Two weeks ago, I took the car in for the check engine light. Diagnosed as a faulty air pump. Get the car back and all seems fine. Mention to service mgr the car sounds a little rough in the morning on a cold start. Tells me to bring it back for a check. Last monday, check engine light comes back on again...grumble. Had appointment to bring car in anyways. Later find out after calling the service mgr(do they ever call nowadays?) that the cams, rockers, and lifters are going to be replaced! Oh, and I get a new dash too... Egads! Has anyone else gone through this before? My car is a '98 E430. One of the early builds (April 22, 1998), but certainly not the first! They've had the car for a week, so hopefully, it will be okay after all this. Apologies for the length of the message, but wanted to find out from others about their history with this motor... Regards, Travis Ma |

TLM,
It sounds like you got a Lemon...April, 1998 build actually is not "Early build", but "mid-model year" car. 1998 models should be already started building sometimes in Aug/Sept 1997. Andy Kuo ------------------

This is not a lemon, I have seen these minor things and it is normal. A few bugs had to be worked out. It should be fine now. I hope a good tech did the repairs, if so, you are fine.

Benzmac, I hope the mechanic is good too. It's at the dealer still. I have no idea who the technician is. From what I was told, the procedure for fitting all the bits together involves precise temps and what not... No, it's not a lemon, but it's a little disheartening to have to deal with these sort of problems when the car is barely 2 years old and under 30K.... cheers! Travis |

AKRY, I believe the first 2 plug/3 valve V-8's were not built until 1998, or maybe December 1997. The 1998 E430 did not arrive in the U.S. until Feb 1998. None of the 1998 E430's were in-country during 1997. I dropped my June 1997 purchase plans to by an E420 and waited for the 1998 E430 when I discovered information on the new engine.
