Wiper Problem -- Opinions Please

Hi All:

My C43 just developed a strange problem. When I turn on the winshield wiper it seems to stick/hesitate at top of its extension (center of winshield) then it continues its stroke slowly, comes back and does it again. In hard rains after a few minutes the wiper seems to work normally.

What could this be? Dried out wiper blade (mine is one year old)? Broken wiper motor? Lack of oil?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The wiper mechanism needs to be lubricated. Do it before it gets stuck. Do a search a few people have had success taking the thing apart for lubrication.

There is a very good and reliable cure for your problem. I tried it when I had the same problem and it worked beautifully. DO NOT GO OUT IN THE RAIN.

Tump, if I sent you my e-mail address would you send me pics of the car, exhaust, interior?

Just that what you have in your C43 is my dream car

Ethan:

Sure thing. Send me a pm with your email. I have yet to take a series of digital pictures of the car. I can't photo the exhaust but go to WWW.Club202.com and look for the Statge I Exhaust thread -- they have pictures of the actual custom exhaust there.

Hello Tump,

Try the following site to resolve your very common wiper problem
(for the single wiper equipped MB's).
Did you try a search? I do remember me a thread with pic's but I am not shure that was on this forum.

http://business.baylor.edu/Richard_Easley/autofaqs/wiper.htm

Do this on regularly base and forget about this "problem"!

Problem Solved

Thanks guys for all your help. Problem solved by lubing the wiper mechanism. To accomplish this fix on a mono-blade W202:

1. Snap off the plastic cover at the base of wiper arm;
2. Remove the bolt holding the wiper arm onto the mechanism;
3. Remove the wiper arm;
4. Remove the plastic cover over the wiper mechanism by carefully prying the sides of the cover at the bottom of the cover (closest to the engine) away from the sides of the wiper mechanism and lift it off;
5. Apply some grease with your fingers to the wiper shaft that moves the single wiper arm up and down;
6. Turn on the wipers to see if the mechanism works smoothly and to spread the grease around;
7. Reassemble.

This job takes about 20 minutes and should be done every 60,000 miles or so.

Tump,

For step 3, did you just pull the arm along it's long axis to remove? I was trying to remove mine the other day and it wouldn't budge. I didn't want to reef on it any harder for fear of breaking something else.

Thx.

yhliem:

After removing the bolt securing the wiper arm to the wiper mechanism, on my car, the wiper arm just lifted up and off the mechanism -- no problem. Also, on my car, I believe that you can do the whole repair without removing the wiper arm.

On your 124, if memory serves, it is harder to remove the plastic cover over the wiper mechanism but the wiper arm itself should be just as easy to remove.

The web site instructions on greasing the wiper mechanism posted by 95300YDT-A in this thread are also very good.

Good Luck

If its stuck it might be toast....what kind of car?

The older W201/W124 ones are much harder to lube/repair.

Its probably time to find a replacement unit.

When the wiper arm stuck on my '93 190E last month, it turned out to be a defective plastic gear. My indy had one in stock, so I was able to replace the gear and lube all of the associated parts.

87 300tdt.... took it entirely apart, cleaned an re-greased, re assembled fumbled with the timing a few times and now works just fine. it was stuck in the resting position and every thing on it is metal the thing should last another 28 years. AND I was able to clean all the drains!
