Shifter metallic noise - bushings gone? 91 300E

My shifter in a 91 300E (220K) has developed a "metallic" noise while shifting as it lost its tight feel. I am thinking that there must be some bushing(s) that has(ve) worn out. In addition, while placing the shifter on D, I have to wiggle it for the car to catch D sometimes. Any ideas?
Thanks.
