Recommended Fluids for Benz and Volvo
I own a 1998 MB S420 and a 1998 Volvo V70. I enjoy doing the normal maintenance to both cars. I would like to keep a supply of the normal fluids on hand to take care of the cars. Specifically, I'm talking about oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Both manufactures recomment their own brands.
My question is this, Do I need to keep both brands on hand? Couldn't I just keep a supply of one premium brand on hand to service both cars? If so, what brands do you recommend. ![]() |

Power Steering fluid will not cross between Volvo and MB. Volvo still recomends ATF as a power steering fluid. A premium coolant for aluminum heads is fine for both. Oils - check owners manuals for specs, most premium oils will cover both cars. Brake fluid - both autos will require DOT 4. For more info on Volvo reqs, do a search here; http://www.brickboard.com/ .

I stick to MB brand coolant or Zerex G05 for MBs. No idea what coolant is good for Volvos. Can't imagine G05 is bad for any car.
I believe your S420's 5-speed AT requires MB's special ATF for the 722.6 transmission. Not a big deal since you probably don't have the means to check or fill the transmission. Again, no idea what ATF works for Volvos. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |
