is this a Euro 420SEL? Or at least the rims?

This is a car for sale by me and I am curious about the rims. Here's a pic.

Would a Euro engine have more power like the older MB's when compared to American models.

Looks US to me. Definitely aftermarket wheels and wheel openning mouldings. Does it have a VIN viewable through the windshield drivers side? If it does it is US. I think that holds for all 126 models. They may have started doing like the US on all models at some point though. There should be an emissins sticker on the radiator support if its a US model unless that area has been replaced due to accident.

WHO is putting that fender trim on all these old MBs?

Does anyone think it looks nice?

Looks horrible, IMO. A tool to hide signs of rust?

Probably a place for rust to start. Are holes drilled to install these?

Although most of the wheel opening trim is aftermarket. I have seen this trim on a 126 euro car with MB part numbers on it.

There is a history of it as the 100, 108, and 109 chassis had it on many models

I've seen chrome fender trim as factory equipment on W100s and W111/2 coupes and cabrios.

If the EPC picks up the VIN, it's a US-spec car. If the decal under hood mentions EPA standards, it's US-spec car. If the decal in the driver door jamb mentions DOT standards, it's a US-spec car. Most likely, anyway. I don't know if Canadian cars have the same decals as US-spec cars.

Steve, does the EPC in wide circulation include Canadian VINs?

Interesting, I only know of two EPCs: US and Euro. I don't know where Canada falls. Maybe someone can post a Canadian Vin and I can see where it falls.

If it is the alpha-numeric it will work on the US system, I would imagine. It seems that I have seen something about Canadian cars in US info. Maybe the daytime headlights.

Sure looks true blue American to me. I have an 86 Euro 500SE it has shorter bumpers.controls labeled in German,a vacuum head light adjuster on dash and a complience sticker on door jam also vin starts with 126. Wheels would look good on an S10 low rider........

Red face

It is a US version. Euro spec cars have bumpers that look almost like they have collapsed. In addition it has the US sealed beam headlights. No Benz has the fender chrome as either an option or standard. If you don't believe me try getting one past the TUV inspection in Germany!

Why would fender trim prevent a car from passing TUV? I don't think chrome WHEELS would pass, but I am unsure as to how fendertrim would compromise safety.

Because the trim would cover rust and ANY rust, even surface rust is enough for the TUV to order it off the road.....notice you don't see many old Benzes in the Fatherland!
