Chain Front Cover Removal
91 560 SEL
Right in the middle of a chain and guide rail replacement and got the last bolt out from the cover and the darn DIPSTICK TUBE is in the way! One bolt on the lower side in front of the tube cannot be removed because of the tube. How does one get this tube out? I tried twisting it, banging it from the bottom (sump is off) and don't want to break the bottom casting. Its pressed in there real good. Should I get the torch out? It would have been easier to pull the whole engine out and work on it with more room to spare. This is turning into a complex job. I have all the parts and a lift in my barn, (lucky me) so now what? Thinking of replacing the tube with a flexible one if I have to hacksaw the thing out!

I might have to cut it off about a half inch from the bottom and then clamp a sleave tube over it upon reassembly. Any ideas would certainly be welcome at this point.
I don't think the cover can come off unless the tube is out of the way.

find a socket that will fit tight on the outside of the tube. don't want to mushroom it. whack on that from the bottom. good luck, chuck.

Cut the bolt with a hacksaw leaving enough to get on the remnants with vice grips, then remove the rest of it.

How about using a drift to knock the tube out from below?
But then you have to get it back in!

i used p b blaster and then got it loose by turning back and forth placing my hands just above and just below the "s" bend in the tube. Once loose, i drove it up from below with a hammer. Wish i'd have used Chuck's socket idea, that would have been better than peening it back into round. To reinstall, i put the tube in my freezer for an hour, applied very light heat near the hole, and a light coat of p b blaster she slid right home. Good luck.

Gerry:
just curious, are you trying to replace the bottom rails also, and is that the reason why you need to remove the front cover? emmy |

Thanks for all the replies, guys.
Yes, Emmy I am replacing all the rails. Why, because they are plastic and prone to failure. Also I really want to see whats in there! Every thing came off easy enough and I like to take my time and have all the parts super clean before reassembly. The cover, hopefully, will come off tommorrow if I can get the tube out. I plan on theading the pan where the tube goes in and installing a "flexible" tube dipstick. www.lokar.com makes them for hot rods and they look great. This way when the cover has to come off in another 100k miles, it will be a snap! Stay tuned!

I did a cover off on my Euro 500SE ,and it was a good thing I did as one bottom rail was paper thin.I also replace the oil pump chain and it's rail while I had it open.I would try bp blaster and a little heat around the tube then try twisting it back and forth I think if you hit it from the bottom even with a tight fitting socket you might mushroom it, even a tiny bit would make it nearly impossible to take out...........

I'm going to try the 'Heat and wiggle' method today.
Here is an idea - if I can get it out I might drill out the hole very slightly so the tube is a loose fit and maybe tap in a small 'set screw' in the case to hold it in there. What-ya think. It will make future R/R jobs a bit easier.

Gerry, I would advise against enlarging the hole with a drill bit because then you are apt to create an oil leak.
