I ran into this myself having decided to start doing my own oil changes which I've avoided until now due to the mess, but I'm sick of my local independent screwing up my car (various parts not reattached, bonus tools left under my hood, etc.)
I bought an expensive-from-the-dealer MB oil filter a few days ago and found out that they changed to a Purlux brand which uses an even-more-expensive special wrench to remove (unless you use a universal style wrench of course). Some research here revealed no compelling reason to use the MB version (and at least one impassioned plea to stick with OEM like Hecht or Mann) so the Purlux is going back to the dealer, and four Hecht filters just arrived today from Fastlane.  Ordering from there supports this message board and Phil's customer service is always excellent.Fastlane/Partshop sells only the official MB filter wrench for them, which looks nice at $25 but requires a 22mm socket to drive it, which is potential extra expense and cumbersome compared to snapping it directly onto a 3/8" drive extension like other wrenches do. So I ordered the Hazet 2169 from Samstag Sales, it should arrive shortly. First time ordering from them but they have flawless 2000+ eBay feedback. By the way, the cheap 74-76mm wrenches at your local auto parts stores don't work. Wrong number of flutes. My $4 loss is your gain.

You really do not need to bear down on the filter when installing. No need to spend $20-$25 on an oil filter removal tool.

The cheapie 74-76mm wrenches (at least those in my local stores) have the wrong number of flutes, 15 instead of 14. I crammed it on the filter anyway but it lost it's grip under pressure and just spun uselessly (this was trying to remove the old filter -- I don't know how tightly it was installed).
The wrench I bought was fiberglass or something though, maybe a metal version would cram on well enough to bite in. You can also buy also buy various universal-style wrenches for less than $20 that would probably work if you get one that will work in tight quarters (pretty tight squeeze in my car). But I like the simple pleasure of a purpose-built tool for a few extra bucks. At least I hope I do, it hasn't arrived yet.

The Hazet wrench came in the mail today -- a fast and smooth transaction by Samstag Sales. They have a variety of other esoteric tools, might be worth a look if you need something you can't get from PartsShop.
Photo below shows: - New style Mercedes/Purflux filter ($12 and special wrench required, I'm returning it) - Hecht OEM style filter from Fastlane ($6 from Fastlane) - Black plastic wrench from NAPA (only $4 but didn't work). - Hazet cast alloy wrench ($25 delivered, but fits like a glove --- aaah ).Eliot -- Here are the threads I found useful when I was surprised by the new Purflux filter and I decided to stick with the cheaper and more widely available OEM style: Purflux Thread Purflux Thread #2
