300E oil pressure gauge question
a quick question about the gauge on my '91 300E- when my car is really warmed up- (after at least 30mins-hour driving) my oil pressure guage at idle and in Drive flickers between 1 & 2. If I shift into neutral it'll be a bit steadier at just under 2. At all times with acceleration it is normal (pegs at 3) and coasting 2.5
I know the oil is circulating better once it warms up but is it normal for the gauge to flicker like this? I run 15w40.

The gauge should not be dancing around if the engine rpm is constant. I would think something may be wrong with the oil pressure sender if this is the case. Oil pressure between 1 bar and 2 bars at idle is normal.

Mine does the same thing-
A very fast flicker only very hot after extended highway driving. Michael

Same here..
Only mine flickers all the way from 0-3 bar when idling. Very annoying to look at. Freestyler

I'm not sure how you interpret "flicker", but I am assuming you are referring to a steady change in reading depending on engine load and temperature, and not a rapid oscillation of the needle...
...as Ali Al-Chalabi put it, you have a problem if the latter is the case. That said, I replaced my oil sender a few months ago. Normal readings should be between 1 and 2 bar and pegged at 3 when accelerating. And the 1-2 bar readings should only fluctuate with varying loads, not when at a constant speed or idle...

By "flicker" i mean the needle is bouncing from 0-3 bar 2-3 times per second.
This only happens when idling with a warm engine. As soon as i touch the gas, the needle will stay steady at 2.5 - 3 bar, depending on the load. 3 bar when driving steady down the road. Freestyler

Mine does the exact same thing. I haven't had a chance to really deal with it, but I have noticed that the sensor wire is loose at the pressure sender. Not sure if that's the problem, or the sender, or what, but I would figure if it's the connection, it'd peg the needle in N, D, or P (just in D, idling).

I have a vacuum leak somewhere that causes my idle to "surge"...but my tach and oil pressure readings fluctuate in harmony...

Mine is pegged under power, and after it is thoroughly warmed up, it will sink between 1 & 2 at idle in drive after, say, being on the interstate. However, when coming to a halt from speed, it flickers just a little bit--almost unoticeable--my guess is the auto trans is shifting from 4th back down to 1st? And this causes the ever so slight flicker? By flicker I mean it moves from 2 to just a little above 2, sort of like a tachometer when downshifting to a stop.
