97 e420 transmission
I have recently experienced some unusual symptoms w/ my e420. I can shift manually just fine. When in 4th-overdrive however, the auto shifting becomes very klunky. Particularly from 2nd to 3rd. At times it's fine, other times very rough. I've babied it for the past few weeks. Yesterday I had to accelerate or get run over by an idiot running a very red yellow light... The transission from 2nd to 3rd was very abrupt.
Aren't these trannys sealed? If so, can the dealership check the specs via their computer program, and re-configure somehow? Am I looking at a bunch of $$?? Thanks in advance. Dave 1997 e420 1989 Porsche 944s2 1988 Jeep Wagoneer

Thanks a lot. I searched previously, but not under the correct tranmission model. It appears there have been a wide variety of issues w/ this tranny...we'll see which mine is closest to.
Thanks again. Dave

As you have probably learned, there is nothing sealed about this transmission except the manufacturer recommendation. There are drain plugs on both the pan and torque converter in that year as well as a replaceable transmission filter. The adaptation values of the transmission can be checked with the appropriate scanner.
