AC repair question

I'm replacing the evaporator on a '99 E430 so a lot of the car is apart. Do I have to put everything back together before I can fill and test the system?

thanks,

Peter

You will need to have all the AC parts fitted together. Then you need to evacuate the system before filling with freon.

txstinger - thanks for the reply.

What I'm trying to avoid is putting the car back together to find out there is still a leak. So you're saying that I can test for that by pulling a vacuum (once the AC system is mechanically complete) - right?

Then I need to reassemble the rest of the car to run the engine and have the AC working so that I can refill it with freon - right?

thanks again

Peter

AC Repair Question

I do not believe you need to charge the system to determine if you have corrected your leak(s). When you put a vacume on the system, if there is a leak the vacume will not hold.

How long the AC system should hold the vacume I do not know but it varies from system to system.

a/c question

I did my r129 last october. You may test the system w/o putting everything in place--- You have to connect the airbags though or else it will send an error message to the comp. make sure that the instrument panel is also inplace so that you can monitor temp and oil pressures while testing the system - this saved me from big trouble because when I tested my system, The radiator was not full - all the way, the temp went up fast!!! w/o the gauge telling me this, I would have over -heated the engine. So, first connect all A/C components- vacuum , then charge. connect air bags passenger and driver. connect instrument panel, connect battery. start and charge(refrigererant) some more. read guages

good luck - I was able to finish mine in 26 hrs from start to finish. Not hard - just very detailed.

*** I vacumed mine for 1 hr and kepy the gauges over night- if no changes on gauges, then you're good to go**
