Axel boot treatment?

Has anybody used liquid or spray silicone ( or ???)on their axel shaft boots to keep them from drying out and cracking?
This works nicely on scuba gear and window trim, but am open to suggestions before slopping it on the axel boots.

The boots on my '82 300sd are showing some age cracking but are still in pretty sound shape overall and I'd like to help keep them that way as long as possible.

Thanks----------Robert
