I fully expect that you can buy the integral unit in the top picture (for $14 here at partsshop) remove the brushholder from the alternator and replace it with the integral brushholder/voltage regulator unit. Just tie the cable up out of the way.
I did this some years ago on my wifes '73 250. I fully expect that you can do the same thing on your car. Good luck, |

My 108 uses the second type pictured. That one is mounted behind, and below the right headlight, just below the "brain". No idea which type the 107 uses off hand, but by age I would suspect it to be similar to my 108.

Mike,
I'm pretty sure that if you ever have a failure you can do as I say. The early seventies used the remote mounted regulator that can be replaced with the later small unit mounted directly in the alternator. Are you having a mild summer in Michigan? Have a great day, |

Larry,
I was going to put in a brush pack, but the alternator for the 4.5 has a solid back. I'm assuming it is because mine is actually a '72 registered as a '73 and there was a change in alt design. Let me tell you finding where those MB engineers hid the regulator was tough. The summer weather here isn't too bad...it changes daily. One day mid 90's with high humidity (yesterday) to barely reaching 70 with a nice north wind (today). Expected lows tonight will dip to nearly 40, low enough that I will turn off the ceiling fans before racking out.
