Air bagged w108
I am in the process of air bagging my 71 w108. I think it's gonna be cool when finished. There are a couple of them on you tube. I know it was a pain getting the kit. But I ordered a kit from airbagit.com. They had to custom make me a kit. I will post updates while I build if any body is interested.
Thanks. |

Well I'm interested in checking out your before and after project. Been waiting for someone here to post about air bagging projects...you might be in the wrong forum...Try stanceworks...you might get yelled at here for not keeping your car original...I'm going to be using Accuair soon. Maybe DW cali will read this. He informed me about Accuair. I own a 1970 280 sel. Good luck

I sure hope no one says anything negative about bagging your car...you can do whatever floats your boat on your own car.
I'd like to see old cars dropped; they look cool and classy at the same time ...AND with a push of a switch you be back at stock ride height in seconds. What is not to like? ![]() Curious, what does a kit like that custom one you got for your W108 cost? |

I've considered putting modern air bags on my 6.3. A kit costs about $1500 which is much less then what it would cost to rebuild the valves. But some fabrication will be required.

Not to stir up crap. But what's the difference of bagging a car versus the people on these forums that cut or heat there springs to lower the stance? At least I have the option to put the car back to stock with the flip of a switch. Plus the ride will be great.
But ups just dropped the kit off. Kit was just under 1250. |

not to promote stirring up crap, but most of the people who want to "bag" a W108/9 W114/5 don't know anything about the history of Mercedes Benz. what those production cars meant to the company, or to the history of the automobile. in 1962 or 63 the W111 coupe had 3 piston girling calipers on it, and a few years later Dual circuit brakes. the v8 powered W108 had vented front rotors and wheels with fins in them to push air onto the rotors(discs all round). sunroof, A/C, power windows, transistorized ignition systems, the 600 with a fully hydraulic rear seat... safety and technoligical advances light years ahead of the rest of the game. there weren't really any competitors.
do you not understand these are cars of pride and prowess and historical significance. just because they're old doesn't mean they aren't still special. if you gave 2 $hits about automobiles in any sense you wouldn't bag a Mercedes. that's what cheap Volkswagen's are for. I'm not a purist in any sense of the word, I've hacked my W111 into an animal. but I feel that stancing an older chassis Mercedes (specifically bagging it) is doing it a disservice not to mention the swing axle doesn't like it one bit. the 6.3 is a different animal with the suspension designed around the car and the fact the motor weighs a ton and the car is extra long. since your car is an early one, the fuel injector pump on the M130 probably will need a rebuild, that's about $1000 or more. or maybe your D-jetronic will give you nightmares.. but I'm sure since your stancing it, you already knew to be prepared for that.. I'm not bashing you... do what you gotta do... just tired of seeing people buy things that they don't know anything about.

I would be no more interested in a bagged 108 than I would be in a vegged 126. It's your car and you can do what you want with it. I hope you like the way it turns out, but don't expect everybody to like it.

Thanks Skippy.
You are right, if I expected everybody to like it, then I would of taken a poll and built a car that everybody would approve of. But is this forum about people and THEIR cars?? Anyways started putting all the fittings together and plumbing the compressor and tank. Sunday gonna start working on the suspension. |

Actually I'm thinking more about doing this for my W123 (if I ever get it back together again) - I'd like to fit an alternative to those scary front springs. I'm not really into the low rider look or the silly camber look but comfortable height adjustable suspension for my old bones sounds good!
