M116.980 Engine (Variations between Camshaft Part Numbers)
Hi Everybody,
I have 1971 w108 280SE 3.5 with M116.980 early D-Jet Euro engine and I have some questions regarding to variations of camshafts(series) used in early m116 3.5 engines. So, I would like to ask, Are there any differences between camshafts 1160513001 left side(3101 right) and 1160514601/4701? On my car 3001/3101 used. I asked this question, because I have spare cylinder heads removed from M116.982 early 350SLC which has 4601/4701 cams on and perfect condition. I'm currently rebuilding engine and I want to use this cams. Just want to know, this cams are same, or degrees are different? If same Why numbers are different?.. The 30/31 pair and the 46/47 pair have the same opening and and closing points as shown in the factory manuals. What is not shown in the manuals is any information about lift or profile.
A few measurements around the lobes will reveal relative lift differences, if any. |

Kutluhan,
There are numbers actually stamped on the back face of the cam and these are what most of us use to refer to cams (ex 52/53, 46/47 etc). MB used different part numbers over production runs, but those numbers always referred to the cam type and its timing. See the attached PDF for full cam info.

Thank you very much Tomguy and Frank for replies and detailed information. Information you gave really very useful for me, specially this pdf file that shows camshaft specifications was what I was looking for. Thank you very much Tomguy for sharing. I think since first m116.981/80 3.5 launched in 1969/1970 till mid 70's together with other 3.5's early 4.5's,MB modified engines and during production replaced some part numbers for following m116/117 engines.
By the way, today I opened my spare cylinder heads which were removed from m116.982 350SLC and checked camshafts again. Just one more question, on right cylinder head camshaft, there is a metal projection, do you know what is it about? For balancing? Please checked attached pictures.. Best Regards, Kutluhan |

Not 100% sure if the 46 you're showing is the cam ID - though it'd match with an early 3.5 part number. The other "Projection" is probably for balancing, it's not functional.

Hi Tomguy,
I checked your earlier thread regarding to camshaft series.I know this. You mentioned before. This cams have 52/53 stamped on rear end rollers. Which was removed from my car are 46/47 stamped rear ends. Do you think any performance difference between this cams?Such as 52/53 lower than 46/47? or same Regards, |

According to MB, they're the same.
