help with 108 Ignition switch
I'm new to this forum and I have a 67 250s that I would love to drive on a regular basis. But,
My ingition switch quit working (steering wheel lock works fine) the switch fell out in my hand. It didn't seem to have any thing holding the switch into the Key/steerwheel lock. The switch looks in good condition and I would like to install it myself. How do I get easier access to the back of the key/steerwheel lock mechanism, and What holds the ignition switch in place. Additionally what set of repair manuals are the easiest to read and understand as I'm going to be doing most of the work. Thank you |

Sorry that I don't know more about MB ign. switches, but no one else is answering, so in general there should be a spring loaded tooth of some sort towards the rear or middle of the switch. Yours will be missing or not deployed. Get a new switch,it should install with very little effort . Good luck.

As for manuals, the only one worth its salt is the factory publication. It's not designed to be read cover to cover, but as 1,000 separate repair procedures. One of which is replacing the lock cylinder.
For your 250S, the manual to look for is the "Passenger Cars Starting Model Year 1959...". Buy a paperback copy, NOT one of the loose-leafs if you want the most uptodate and complete book you can get. The paperback can be found on ebay for anything from 15-40$. BTW, the 1 volume loose-leaf is missing a few sections, none of which impact the owner of a 250S. The 3 volume loose-leaf, if its not up to revision 40 is way out of date (the set on ebay right now is only upto revision 33). -CTH |

If your ignition switch is like the one in my Dads '67 230SL it should be held onto the back of the steering lock with 2 or 3 machine screws. I had to pull the speedometer out to access the switch when it came loose in the SL.
In this case, the electrical contact portion of the switch loosened from the switch body - a more complicated repair if you don't have a new switch handy. Happy Motoring, Mark
