200D fintail gearbox swap

Have spoken to a specialist over here in U.K. and apparently the auto box in the 1967 200D w110 that I'm looking to buy is a tricky one to rebuild. The specialist did one 5 years ago and the parts were unobtainable then. He says never again, caused a lot of headaches. Wondering if a later auto box would fit

In fact, yes. The most promising substitute will be a K4C 025 (Type 722.2xx). This box was first used in model year 1968 in the W114/115 cars.

Thanks for your reply Frank! Sounds promising, do you know if it would bolt straight in or would I need to make modifications to fit it Also wondering if I'd have a problem with different gear ratios

The gear ratios are almost if not the same. 4th gear is 1 to 1 in both transmissions

Thanks Chris, so that sounds ok, just wondering if it would bolt straight in or if I would need to make any physical modifications

Best information suggests that one bolt location on the bell housing-to-intermediate plate interface was moved on the change from OM621 to OM615. The intermediate plates from later engines have both locations.
There is a control pressure linkage required that connects the "throttle" to the transmission control pressure lever.
The rear mount may very well be in the same location, but in any event will be close.
Shift linkage will likely require a bit of rework.
