W115 Mercedes 220 (1971) Petrol engine Valve Clearances & Static Timing Settings
Hi All . . .
I'm in need of some assistance and would appreciate if if someone could help me in verifying/adjusting the Valve Clearance on W115 Mercedes 220 Petrol engine please . . . I also don't own a Timing Light and was wondering if I could set the timing on this engine Statically using a 12V Test Light . . . and what the degrees before TDC should be . . . While reading through a previous Forum Post made by @Topher39 , ( http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes-forum/325521-timing-setting-help-please-1969-w115-220-gas-4-cylinder-2.html ) . . . I noticed mentioning of checking the Torque on the Cylinder bolts before adjusting the Valve Clearance . . . No mention of the Torque Specs though . . . I would appreciate some guidance in this as well please. Any and all advice in this regard would be Highly appreciated . . . Thanks to any contribution towards this topic in advance . . . |

Valve clearances...
Cold I .10 mm E .20 mm Hot I .15 mm E .25 mm I wouldn't do any head retorquing unless I felt a loose bolt. When adjusting valves set them as close to spec as possible but with any err favoring additional clearance, never tighter clearance. Aim for slight drag on an oiled feeler gauge. Make a drawing of the camshaft identifying inlet and exhaust valves then write the clearance on the cardboard next to each valve and check them off methodically when completed. Do a compression test after the valve adjustment. I'd use a "C" oil rated for diesels in that car because it is a flat tappet sliding camshaft vs a roller cam. Flat tappets like extra ZDDP in the oil to prevent wiping out the camshaft lobes Good luck!!!
