'80 300D WVO conversion question

i feel so stupid to ask this...
so where is my lift pump? i am about to install my hose on hose and switches and im thinking, shouldn't i put the switch between the fuel tanks and the lift pump? cause i was just about to put it between my filter and Vegtherm before the ip

The IP and the lift pump are not the same thing are they? Cause my searches keep telling me the lift pump is after the primary filter, and i always thought that was the Ip? some of you might be wondering why a confused idiot like me is doing his own conversion, but i ask questions before every step that confuses me, so i think i'll be ok.

Ok, the lift pump is mechanical, so it is directly tied in (bolted to) the Injection Pump. This means that fuel comes from the feed line (tank) through the pre-filter, then through the lift pump, next through the primary filter, and then it enters the Injection Pump. Since the lift pump supplies the Injection pump with as much fuel as it could use at full load there is normally some excess fuel that is not used. This fuel is routed out the return line of the Injection Pump. The Injection pump supplies the injectors with as much fuel as they could ever use, so there is normally some excess there also. This excess fuel flows through the braided return line (that daisy chains the injectors together) until it meets the Injection Pump return line at the banjo bolt on top of the primary filter. At this banjo bolt is where the return lines from the Injection Pump and the Injectors meet and flow out the return line back into the tank.

You should proabably use an auxilary pump to pump your veggie. This will shorten switch-over time.
Does that answer your question?

Yes indeed it does. That was my suspicion.
I decided to deal with a longer switch-over time and stay with the stock pump. i know there are many 300D s out there without an aux. and I am trying to stay simple.

i hear you there. that was a big factor for me getting a kit; i don't have time to reinvent the wheel so to speak.
so what parts are you installing?

Here is a connection diagram which allows you to use the stock lift pump with both WVO and diesel and still have separate filters for each.
By adding a second valve, the return line can be directed to the tank of origin, delayed on shutdown to prevent WVO in the start tank.

I am using three three-ports (one is actually a 6 port that I'm going to cap three ports), a Vegtherm and a hose-on-hose, with a stock VW Mann filter wrapped in copper coolant pipe. the first thing I did after teeing off my coolant was to run that straight to the filter, then to the hose-on-hose.
I did a ton of stuff yesterday, the realized I had put the switch between my veggie filter and the primary filter going into the lift pump, which means veggie will go through the diesel filters. So I guess I'll have to replumb it to put the switch in between the diesel filter and the injector pump. which sucks cause I wanted it as close to the veggie filter as I could, so as to not lose heat as it passes through that exposed area. I guess I can insulate it somehow.
I am still puzzling out a way to tee in a temp. gauge without machining a special part.
www.windrift.us/dreamerbiofuels/lunaphotos.htm documents the mess I made of things.
I also post everyday to the infopop forum.

Thanks for the diagram, Tony. after I went to bed I realized that instead of capping three ports on that six-port, I can use it the way you diagramed, thus diverting veggie from my diesel filter.

Plug the banjo. Remove the banjo and you will see that it is hollow. Be careful as there are two washers, one on top and theother under it, don't lose 'em.
The hollow hole in the bottom of the banjo has to be filled to avoid vegie going to the main tank. This can be done three ways; get a solid nut (hardest), put a weld in it (gotta know how to weld) or the simplest is to put a screw (the screwable end) into the chuck of a drill and run the head over a flat file check until it can be lightly "tapped" into the banjo hole and held there by pressure. Use a short screw for this.
