Have a "deal" with a local chinese food resturaunt to take their oil...ALL their oil. 3 fryers emptied daily.
in your neck of the woods, I wouldn't expect on this lasting very long. With that level of supply you should look into a heated 2nd tank or a biodiesel reactor setup. The blends are somewhat less charted territory for longevity and temperature tolerance. And at least in winter biodiesel cuts fine with kerosene which will also thaw solidified fuel in the tank.

quiet running of the engine may not be an indication of good things either. I've run 100% ATF in a 603 which makes it as quiet as a new s-class gasser but I doubt it's good for the engine given the higher viscosity not to mention stinky smell.

Thumbs up Running WVO

Those of you comtemplating running WVO in your diesels should do a google search on the subject. There are numerous websites devoted to this fuel. Unless you live in a year round climate that stays above 50F, you will require a two tank heated WVO system. Here are a few websites for kits and forums.

www.frybrid.com, www.greasecar.com, www.plantdrive.com , www.elsbett.com.

As has been posted on other threads, filter the WVO to at least 5 microns and check for water. Water will ruin your injectors. I have driven my Ford powerstroke on WVO and can't tell any difference in performance between WVO and diesel.

WVO will power your benz!

John

When you approach a resturaunt owner to procure oil for experimental use,
It is 99.9% of the time a very positive experience.

Major factors...
A: They usually have to pay to get rid of it.
B: When they hear your putting it in your car,
they will say "what?", from there on they will
be very helpful since you just blew their mind.

A resturaunt near me takes the oil straight from the fryers into jugs for me,
and is certian not to give me oil with water in it from the cleaning. He thanks me when I pick it up...

I believe the quiet running is from the lubrication of the oil.
When I hit my switch and run 100% SVO (at 175F),
my engine dosen't sound diesel. it loses 80% of the tingtingtingtingtingness.
it runs smoother and feels much more graceful. Quite noticeably reduces shake at stoplights too.

well, this was just a Quick functionality/feasability test.

My Current mix ratio is 15:1 for every 15 litres WVO, is one litre of RUG.
seems to work alright. I plan to use WVO like this, filtered to 1 micron and blended to stay pourable at 5*C. Then as I stockpile thru the winter, burning regular Diesel, I'll start making B100, and blend for the weather. I have access to 2 1000 Litre fuel tanks, so I'll have no problem storing it. Which brings up another question. How long can WVO stand before it goes rancid? it'll have some animal fats in it so I'm expecting it to go bad fairly quickly.

the stuff I used just now is 4 months old. sitting in a cubie in my garage at no lower than 10*c.

I'm devising plans for a centrifugal filtering system . is a gauze type filter fine enough to filter WVO to a usable state?

This ONLY applies to regions where biodiesel/SVO use is NOT prevalent

In my neck of the woods, Northern California, the normal rules do not apply. All restaurants in the area that produce waste oil have been eaten up by big biodiesel refiners or other local independent brewers. The days of restaurants actually paying for oil removal is long gone. All the restaurants know and expect that someone will take it for free. I'm actually waiting for the day that restaurants charge for the stuff.

yeah..that's not lubrication, it's combustion characteristics of WVO (slower burn, less BTU's). I can't explain the specifics of why it loses the diesel pinging but it's not lubrication (this would only occur if it were to say lube up the moving parts in the IP..if the IP were noisy, or the lifters which you can quiet down a bit with 0W-40 etc.)

603's can be tuned to run that smooth on diesel or WVO as well..

don't get me wrong...did the greasecar thing, run on b100 when I can make it or get it (not easy living in NYC..and I drive about 1x/month right now so doesn't matter). I say rock on alternative fuels..just be careful.
