'85 300sd Veggie & Hydrogen Cell

my brother has a '85 300sd w/ the Love Craft conversion running 100% WVO and we put on a dual cell hydrogen injection system a few weeks ago.

the good news is we noticed at least a 20-25% increase in fuel economy.

the bad news is that the hydrogen system is draining a lot of power from the batteries and sometimes the car doesn't start. if we jump it it starts right up but we can tell its really taxing the alternator and the battery.

we tested the alternator and with just the engine running, love craft fuel pump, lights, radio, etc. its drawing around 45 amps.

the stock alternator for these cars are 65 amps right?

we have a pulse width modifier to turn up or down the hydrogen power but if we drive around with the hydrogen system above 1/2 power to full power there is a chance that once the engine is shut down it won't start back up on its own.

what can we do? upgrade ALT?? duel ALT's???

looking to do what we need but not trying to spend a ton of cash.

thanks and i want to get this figured out for my bro and because i have a '83 300td wagon that i want to use hydrogen too.

-ADAM

Double failure. A Lovecrap "conversion" AND you fell for the hydrogen scam! Please tell me you didn't fall for that FRAUD's (Olivefarm) lies.

The best thing to do is get rid of all that junk and get your car running right.

Welcome to the forum, please believe me when I say that with some notable exceptions, most here are not *********s.

Opinions here vary greatly on the use of VO, and with respect to the various 'systems' LC receives the most derision.

On this forum, hydrogen generation enjoys much less respect than VO, but if you want to upgrade your alternator, there is a Bosch model found in some saabs, that will bolt in with a slight re-clocking of the case.

Thats because LC and all the hydrogen scams have earned it.

Basicly, the hydrogen is a scam. Yes you can increase mileage with
it, the draw or "energy" needed to produce it out paces the increase
in mpg. Nothing is free, and this goes for energy as well. Putting a larger
alt. will not solve the problem, It will produce more amps, but the hp
needed will effect the mpg, just the same as turning on the a/c or
adding a few large passengers in the backseat.

Why attempt to improve the mileage on free fuel

Take all that crap off a good car and get it back to factory spec. Hopefully that grease didn't clog up the IP and nozzels to badly.

x2... If you really want to upgrade the alternator (a good idea in any case) do a search on AL129X on this site. The Bosch AL129X alternator will bolt right into the 300SD once you swap pulleys. You do not have to open the alternator and re-clock it on the 300SD. You will have to run new wires from the junction box on the fender to the alt.

Wow

WOW! didn't expect to get so many responses so quickly. this really is a great site! thanks for your time and helping out a new member.

i know the Love Craft isn't a good system. Didn't know this when i bought the "conversion" but it has worked alright for about 20k miles and only really thing i can notice is that it's hard to start first thing in the morning (even in summer in So Cal) but it works great for long trips and has saved me a lot of money on fuel and giving money to countries that don't like us.

we bought the hydrogen kit thinking it would make the car get better mileage and that would mean less veggie to filter and less to burn.

i will look into the AL129X and get that to see if it helps.

it seems like everyone on here doesn't think hydrogen works? i'm not saying it does but i want to try it out and beside the batteries loosing charge the car has gone from averaging 19-20mpg on 100% veggie to 24-25mpg on 100% veggie with the hydrogen cell only pushing 1/2 strength because we can't get the alternator/battery thing under control.

has anyone had sucsess with hydrogen on these 5 cly MB's?

thanks again

You're just gonna wreck your batteries from cycling them over and over. Lead-Acid batteries like to be kept charged. At the very least get rid of the manky hydrogen business. i wonder how hard it would be to add a second tank into the Lovecrap system?...

Kerry is right. 19-20mpg is horrible economy, even for WVO.

My record is 28mpg on D2
I got 24 when I tried 50/50 VO/D2

The instead of recharging you batteries you are generating hydrogen. After upgrading to a larger alternator, your economy will go down more, but your batteries will be charged
