I know my lack of patience would work against me.

That is some serious looking rust. only way to get rid of it is to cut out all the rusted metal and replace with new and get it sealed real good. need a welder to do the job right, don`t want some one doing a bubble gum weld job. you need good weld penetration for the structural integridy of the body. Buy some new Rockers and do it right.

I haven`t tried it yet, but a guy told me to use Acetone in a spray bottle to soften the under coat sealant. then it can be removed easier. also MEK will work, but more leathel to breathe.

I found an almost perfect set of Ivory fenders in PNP for my 240. they had a 50% sale in a few days, so I removed all the bolts on both fenders. day of the sale figured I would just pop the fenders off and be gone. But NOOOO, they were glued on. I used my razor blade knife to cut the stuff, but never did remove them.

I`ll try the Acetone next time, wonder what it would do to the plastic spray bottle.

I had the same experience on my W116. I stuffed a complete set of California W116 panels in my pal's truck to go on my W116 (also half price sale), but never could get the fenders off.

Well after going to work on some of the rust it seem that the rust under the battery tray is surface rust and stains from the tray. I am going to put the por15 on the trunk spots today.

I may try to use some naval jelly and then spray rustolem on the rockers and fenders just to slow the problem down until I can cut it out and fix it properly ie learn to weld...

I've sanded and POR15'd quite a bit, after every winter, but honestly there are nooks and crannies where it will hide and grow, and it has. Another thing I'm going to try before the nasty salty road season comes is to coat the bottom with an oil like Fluid Film, it is lanolin based and supposed to help.

Good luck!

The workshop manual for my car references M-B Cavity-Filling Wax as a product to spray inside panels to prevent rust.

Sounds like this stuff is similar.

Hi Matt,

So what I've read (never sure what to believe) is that you want a product that doesn't harden but stays relatively fluid/liquid-like. I don't know if the wax products actually dry or not. Anyway, time will tell, I plan to get a big batch of this fluid film stuff and spray the bejezus out of the under side of the car before the salt season, so we'll see. I hate to see how this thing is just slowly dissolving. :-( It always seems like what you see as visible rust is just the tip of the iceberg and if you really pull up carpets and seats you begin to see what is really going on.

POR15 is complete in the trunk and while I was waiting for the first coat to dry I gutted the interior and have thankfully found ZERO rust on the floorboards I did however find my 6th grade report card... No I'm not kidding

Your second pic from the top has me a bit concerned as it looks like your frame is affected. Is that the case?
Dave, do u know where the PO got the rocker panels???

If you get stuck looking for parts I can pass on some European manufacturer names if necessary - though buying stuff here and shipping to there would be seriously expensive for such a large part.
