Just a few speaker questions. Does anyone know the size of the speakers in the front doors of a '91 190e? From the diagram in the CD manual, cars with door speakers had the "active bass speaker system". Is that correct? Any thoughts on how well the door speakers and the active base system work?
Also, I have 5 1/4" 2 way Clarions in the rear deck (came with the car). What have others used in the rear that fits well and sounds good.

Thanks,
Ted

190 SPEAKERS

Ted

I just replaced all the speakers in my sons 190 and I put some Boston 6" in the rear deck. (this did require modification of the plastic mounting pods that were original) I also used 4" Bostons in the dash. (I had to grind two of the 4 mounting ears off to make them fit) After a lot of research I decided to use the MB door midrange/subs but scraped the factory amp and fader control. I put some Kicker crossovers on the door speakers to cut them off at 100hz and also on the dash speakers cutting them off at 350hz. I am in the process of adding an alpine amp and a Kicker 8" square Solo-Baric sub in a custom box connected to the first aid kit opening to support the lacking bass.

I hope this helps,
Marc

I was told 6X9's will fit in the rear deck without any mods on a 190E. Is that BS? I'm planning on two for the rear deck (SONY ES 3 ways) to get some audible mids in combination with the two PG 10" DVC subwoofers I have already purchased for the trunk. What is the story with the 6X9's? Does anyone know of the modification? Is it attainable? PLEASE RESPOND!!!!!!
THANK YOU MIKE MCKINNEY

speaker size

Mike

I have read, like you, that 6x9's will fit in the rear deck of our cars, but after changing mine I don't see how. If the 91 is like my 93 the rear deck speakers fit into a plastic pod that snaps into the metal sub-structure. I had to make modification to these pods to get a 6" round speaker in. I was interested in using the stock speaker covers though. If you were to mount the speaker on top of the shelf and only had the magnet hanging below the shelf there would be a slim chance of a speaker fitting. That would be based on the speaker design and size of magnet. All you can do is give it a shot, pop of the covers, snap out the speakers, and lay your new speakers in to see. As long as you don't mess them up, if they don't fit, return them for something that will. If you are into metal cutting there is plenty of room for a 6x9 but I was wanting to keep a stock look. Let me know how it turns out.

6X9's for rear deck

I was told if you got some adapters for the 6X9's, then they will infact fit on top of the rear deck with no mods to the frame or holes, just drilling in screws. Grills from the rear deck of an 1988 Honda Accord or Lexus 1S300 will work. I'm not sure of the idea of using the grills though to house the 6X9's. Honda or Toyota parts in a Mercedes? I don't think I could do it!!! Does anyone know if they are any other grills that would accomodate 6X9's for the rear deck? HELP!!!!!!!
THANK YOU
MIKE MCKINNEY

yes 6*9's will fit, but u have to do some cuttin, u dont have to cut any metal, u can use a shap utility nife bto cut into the rear deck board it is made out of some type of wood ,but u have to space everything right,i just did it yesterday it took me about 40 min total to cut everything out and install the speakers, it actually fits in reallly nice and is very fluch with the rear deck board

The best looking install of 6x9 speakers on the rear deck of a 190E I've seen was with the rear speaker grills from a Mitsubishi Diamante. The grills are nearly flush with the deck. You have to mount the speakers from the bottom of the deck which requires removal and some metal cutting. Here's the link:

6x9 speakers

6x9s is a good choice but its better to actually take out the stock deck and build a new one out of wood that way you dont become a butcher also with a new deck you can mount the speaker high cause the magnets usually wont fit a spacer would work nice like an extra piece of wood ontop of the deck to mount too then cover the whole thing with a carpet material so its plush. I built a new deck in my 16v 6.5 inch eclipes are there with an 8 inch sub there it rocks
