w123 speaker grill modification
I recently installed a new stereo system with all new speakers. The 4" coaxial speakers I used didn't fit under the dash grills. I cut a hole in the grill to let the tweeter fit.
I didn't like the way it looked and wanted to make it have a more finished look. Here are some pics of what I did. I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't look as good as an uncut grill, but it's better than the holes. ![]() I cut the pieces I needed from a plastic office file bin. I drilled holes and sanded them so the adhesive would have a tooth and glued speaker fabric to them. I used black velcro strips to hold them on to the grills so they can be removed to access the screw. The flash made the holes under the fabric more visible than they are in person. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice work, Chad. Hopefully, I'll be replacing my speakers before long. I may do the same thing, should I need to cut the grills to accomodate the speakers.

That's cool StreekG. I wouldn't have been concerned if mine looked like yours. That fine steering wheel probably helps keep your attention off the speaker grills too.
![]() Your speakers sit lower than mine do. I also had to cut the hole larger than yours to accommodate the wires that go to the tweeter. The tweeters on my speakers sit flush with the top surface of the speaker covers and I couldn't under-mount them due to the vent tube.

Well those speakers were pretty damn good so its hard not to pay attention to them hehe. They sit lower but the tweeter still hit the grill

Great look Chad, I have the same challange with the new kenwoods 4" myself. Dealt w/ the covers protruding out far a few months then aquired a very well custom made dash cover and just dont use the grills.
I do like the look of the grills though, your mod has me thinking..... Dakota 1981 W123 300D China Blue 196K+ |
