Basically. Usually speaker wire is unmarked,as the wires run ground and positive can be interchanged and the speakers will work but be out of phase.

I checked the wiring of my speakers and the rear ones were indeed out of phase. I corrected it, and they still pop when the stereo shuts off. Frustrating stuff. Maybe I should just learn to live with it?

When you corrected the wires, what you did would increase the quality of sound as the polarity is correct, i.e. the frequency wave compliments and not distort one another - thus you won't have much of a headache.

Sometimes too speaker will POP when they are about to go kaput as they are not able to handle the power emitting from the headunit. or perhaps the speakers are not apt enough. You might just want to try out another set of speakers (more powerful) and hear if the pops keep coming up.

The speakers are brand new and could probably handle much more than my little headunit could put out. This whole thing is very frustrating.

If having tried everything and it still pops, check if you need a suppressor?

It an electronic unit that is connected to the headunit and wired in between the headunit set and the distribution of the soeakers. It seeks to reduce or eliminate unwanted oscillations in the circuit, thus creating a less-distorted (akin to purifying) the effect of sound emitting from the speakers.

You'd defintely need one when you start hearing the "aeroplane taking off" sound when the rev increases.

Don't know much about your head unit, but they usually come with a "turn-on" lead, a wire that send a "power on" signal to and accessory amps that you might install.

That being the case, when you turn the power on and off on the head unit, the "pop" is the power supply on the head unit transferring the signal to the speakers. If you had amps in your system, the amps have turn-on relays with a built-in delay...they come on gracefully, well after the initial "pop" from the head unit, so you never hear it.

Since you are running directly off the unit, what you need is a relay (Radio Shack, $10?). Use the turn-on lead from the head unit as the "switch" for the relay, and the millisecond delay it takes the relay to turn on will be just long enough to miss that "pop" that the head unit emits. Might not be fast enough for the turn-off, though.
