Question Old Becker replacment

First of all, let me say that I am new to the Mercedes world, having just bought an '80 450 SEL. I am currently replacing my original Becker Mexico cassette with a Sony CD player. The only problem I am having with removing the old unit is the power cable. It is permanently attached to the back of the unit, with the negative cable soldered directly above it. I don't want to cut the cable because I might want to put the old unit back in someday (just so everything is stock), but if that is the only option then I will. Any suggestions??

My second question is regarding the rest of my stereo system. I currently have two Clarion 6x9's in boxes (I didn't mount them in the back deck b/c of the clearance with the fuel tank). Where is the best place for them. Also, I am thinking about subs, most likely two 10's or 12's. What are my options?

Thanks,

Chad

There is a black wire for 12 Volt with a bullet connector about 12 " from the radio. The gray cable you are talking about goes to the power pack, behind the clove box. Pull the plug from the power pack and you can remove your radio without cutting anything. Once you are at the power pack you also find the two speaker wires ant the antenna control line. If you want to sell the Mexico call Ed at 888 423 3537 x207

You were right on the money. The power supply was right where you said it would be, and removal of the pwr cable was a snap. The antenna cable and speaker wires were there also. By the way, which speakers do those wires go to, front or rear?

Thanks a lot!

The speaker wires from the power pack lead to the fader control and from there you have wires running to the front and rear speakers.

Well, I got the speakers hooked up and the head unit installed, but now I believe the fuse is blown, because neither the stereo or power antenna work, and I think they are on the same fuse. The problem is, I can't find the fuse for the radio. It's not in the main fuse box next to the master cylinder, so I don't know where else it would be. Any ideas???

what wire is what? 1980 450 SLC

Can anybody tell me what wire is what on a 1980 450 SLC. I just removed the stock Becker Mexico cassette and I'm trying to install an Alpine CD head unit. I know the ground and the antenna wires, but there is a black wire coming from the back of the radio connected to the green/red wire with a blue connector. What is that? The grey power cords goes about 12 inches to behind the glove compartment to the power pack, and from the power pack I see the L and R speaker wires and another black wire connected to a (+). I think that's the power?

First, the black wire coming off the back of the headunit is acc 12 volts it hooks to the red green. The brown is ground. The black wire that hooks up to the spade connector on the amp is the antenna 12 volt trigger (it is usually blue inside the sheath or hooks to the blue wire) that goes first to the antenna switch and then to the antenna.

Good Luck!

Thanks SCLJA. I'm going to give it a go this weekend. Do you think MB116 from above fried his head unit? I wouldn't have thought the red green wire was the 12V power.

It is possible , but I think just the fuse blew. There are in line fuses under the fuse panel in the engine compartment that might be blown.
