Yes...sort of.

They are not a drop in by any standards. I ended up taking them to a local shop and having them installed there. They had to cut out the openening by about 1/4 inch all the way around. Cost me $75 but I got the speakers for $92 including shipping on eBay ($149 retail) so it wasn't too bad. Scott LaJolla's Rainbow's are $125/pair plus shipping and they will drop right in so you can save some $$ going that route.

The reason I didn't is because I'd never heard of Rainbow nor heard their sound quality. I actually own Infinity home speakers and am familiar with their quality and sound. Scott has a great reputation on this site and I have no doubt the Rainbow is a good product. But for that kind of money, I wanted to stick with what I knew.

As for the sound, they were worth it. Definitely more bass and smoother than the Sony's I have up front. When it's all said and done, I'll probably replace the Sony's and go with the Infinity 42.5i's in the front and put a sub where the emergency kit goes (either an Infinity Basslink or an Alpine w/amp). But that'll be a year or so down the road when my wife's not looking (hehe).

Let me know what you do and how it turns out. I'd love to compare notes.

Can i do the cutting myself? I have a hacksaw and a dremmel and lots of time on my hands. Is the cutting possible by oneself? Also, the measurements ive read online put the readr at 5 1/8" for factory speakers (cutting prolly required) and 4 5/8" for the front. This leads me to believe there is no cutting required for the front if i use 4s... and i think i will. Is this correct?

You can probably do it yourself it you have the tools and know what your doing. The shop here used an Air Drill but a dremel should do fine. Just take your time and watch out for sparks. Let me know how easy the 42.5's go in. I may do those sooner if it's a simple drop in.

Good luck and let me know how they turn out.

I'm very interested in your mounting of your sub under the first aid comparment. Could you tell me if you enclosed it in a box and how much room below the compartment there is. Is there room for a 10". If you did'nt use a box encloser, how does it sound without. Just installing a new system in my 300E and really like the idea of the sub back there.

getting off topic, maybe??

hey guys...I started this thread at a time when I was simply considering new speakers...now I NEED them...although I appreciate the responses, I have only seen a few that address my original question...i.e., no cutting, no amp, no sub - just simply a crisp, clean, non-surgical drop-in that will give me adequate bass (refer to first post on this thread)...more "on topic" opinions are welcomed...thanks to all in advance, Bill

For a drop in speaker, scott's Rainbow speakers are just what you want then.
