Scott,,,, Front passenger footwell. add a sub?

I have this extra 10" Sub laying around doing nothing, its a free air cerwin vega stealth series from 1992. yup you read it right. Its still in perfect condition.

I was thinking of building an enclosure to sit under the front floormat ont he passenger side to house the woofer. I know it would mean shortening the passenger footwell a bit, but I think I can pull it off.

What do you think?

I will relocate the factory equipment in that place, and the non factory alarm unit as well, to give me maximum depth. I figure I can stand to lose a few inches down there. I just dunno what a sub there would sound like, but I'm willing to give it a go. I have the wood, and I don't think it should be too hard to pop in there and have it hooked up to see what it does. It wouldn't be a permanent install.

In anycase, Just looking for your input. I think I'm going to try it to see what the sound is like and what it does to the sound.

I do a sub in the porsches there all the time and it works rather well. I would reccomend a sealed 8 in or 10 in driver over a free air but iy won't hurt to try it. The other thing to play with is the phasing as it might be out of phase with your trunk sub and this would cut your bass in half. Good Luck

I'm just making a template off the black panel there. then i will pull that panel, relocate electric items and place the new sub panel in place, spacing it off as much as is needed. I figure I will lose around 2-3 inches of leg room by doing this.

Remember I am just doing this for fun. I already cut the template form plexiglass, which I will cover, and mount the woofer behind so it has room to fire, and then I will place a grill on top, to stop stomping feet from going through it.

I will lay the carpet back over it when done. It should be hidden, but add more bass inside. Though I have enough already with the 10" in the trunk, I have the extra woofer, and figured if it ssounds bad, not biggie I can pull it out easily. I'll test it before I move any electrical thousgh.

I'll let you knoow how it goes.

well the trick here is I'm not cutting the factory plastic panel. I'm making my own, so really no cutting of the interior for this mod at all.

Brian Drought used to hang out here - haven't seen him post in a long time. He has a web site that talks about his MBs, home audio, and car audio systems. He did a couple of footwell subs described at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/caraudioequipment.htm and used to have pics of how he did it, he may still have info if you email him. Otherwise, he said the system sounded good but 'lacked headroom'. Good luck.

thanks for the info john, I'm just doing this for fun. I probably wont keep it there. I just hate having audio equipment not in use. I have 5 ... 3 piece computer speaker systems on my computer, as I ended up with extras... A little overkill yeah, but the sound is fantastic hehehe

As for my car, I'm just doing it for the hell of doing it, because I want to tinker some more. hehehe

Alon,

Have fun this weekend with your "benz girl!"

In regards to your sub in the passenger side floor, I dont know how good it would sound there, but my brother used to have 2 8" in the hat deck of his W124, they sounded alright, but I think that a ten back there would be better. You dont want to run long power wires from the trunk amps to the front because it will cause interference. You will have to try to keep the amp close to your custom enclosure, but that will cut out more room. What if you date a tall chick? =)

My brother has been working on for like two years custom kick pannel speakers for his car. He has momo components, but he just hasnt ever put them in, but I think that if you wanted more sound, Id do kick pannels. Make new ones out of fiberglass.

I think its a good idea, but I just dont know how it would sound. You could always experiment and if it doesnt work you could use the box to put it in the back. Let us know if you decide to do it,

Austin

I have a 10" Sub in the trunk already. hehe

In a box ported directly into the cabin through the first aid kit.

This is just to tinker with for fun.

I am int he process of upgrading the speakers slowly. I have some 5 1/4" Infinity seperates. thinking of either squeezed into the dash location, or into the rear factory speaker location.

Either way thats something I plan on doing permnent the sub is in the floor panel just to tinker heheh.

After my tinkering with this mod, I decided it was just too much effort to get it to fit how I wanted and or expected it to. Not that I care, my car sounds great as is with the current 10" woofer in it. I guess I'll have to figure out something to do with this 10" woofer. I hate seeing audio equipment not in use.

Hmmm Maybe I will rig up an amp and build a box for it, then hook it up in the house. Or better yet, hook it up in the boat!!! hehe

Haha, you'd be surprised, car subs sound awesome in a house. My friend has two seperate boxes for 2 12" rockford punches, and his whole basement shakes.

My friend has two 12" PPI's in cube boxes that rock his apartment so much that things will start falling down and coming off the walls... hehehe

But we never get it that loud because of his neighbors.

Of course even at low level with the 7.1 surround sound, it sounds absolutely amazing.

Hiya fellas,

I did indeed have a footwell sub, and I'll drag it out again/take photos and see how it sounds in my new 500E when I get round to putting an audio system in it ;-)

It's an 8in sub in a 1.5 cu.ft box made to fit the end of the footwell.

I also made some midbass boxes to replace the mats themselves....now those were cool
