analog to digital telephone conversion
On 99 and earlier built-in handsfree telephone systems, are there wiring diagrams available to convert supplied Motorola analog phones to new digital or tri-modal 800 Mhz phone systems?
Alternative is to throw out the phone and write off a $1,000 option! Looking for wiring diagram for the cabling system of the built-in phone and for alternative new tri-modal TDMA phone systems also operating at 800 Mhz Have E430 with this option new in 1999. Help! |

I have never heard of people converting an analog phone to digital. I think you will need to gut out the phone to do that, so it will be better off get a new unit. My car came with an analog phone and I ended up taking it out since I have a cell phone and the unit is just taking space.

I ditto Elau's respsonse. Trying to convert an older analog phone to digital is like trying to make a VW into an MB. They are entirely different, with few exceptions. Although most digital phones will still have analog capability to use in non-digital service areas.
Unless you want to pay the much higher cost of analog service, accompanied by roaming charges, I think you'll have to bite the bullet and write that option off. A hands-free kit can be had for ~ $150 plus a couple hours labor to install. The downside is that it won't be integrated as well into the cabin as the OEM unit was. Good luck...DAN |

ANALOG TO DIGITAL PHONE - E430
Appreciate your replies to my dilemma. I may have incorrectly inferred that I wanted to change the "innards" of my analog phone to digital. Not so. I merely want to insert a new digital Nokia phone in the console where the present analog Motorola resides now...BUT I want to re-terminate the cable end which is presently inserted into the MB Motorola to be compatible with the Nokia's requirements. Assuming technically feasible, I would need wiring diagrams for the cable ends for each phone. I would then cut off the end for the Analog and replace with a different termination for the Nokia. With that said, would this make sense or would your replies still be the same? Thanks for your help.

Similar problem in 2002 CLK
You're not alone. I just posted something about this problem I have, not opting for a phone interface in a Comand system. Why get it when I already have the new Motorola V60? I thought I could just get the interface install kit later. Well, I can't...pin assignments are not the same or something.
It's really a shame...it would really make the car "complete" but why have 2 cell phones??? ![]() |

OK Let me first address COMAND:
You can always adapt COMAND 2.0 (first Generation can and non canbus) to accept a digital phone. All that is required is the interface unit, a length of fibre optic cable (for the optic loop) a plug and the harness along with cell phone holder. No the tricky bit, earler system were anly available for the Nokia range up to about about 2004 and you had the choice of either console mounted or arm rest mounted depending on whether you had steering control or not. You have to have comand updated if you want to use the txt or sms function via comand. After 2004 mercedes introduced the UHI system (universal handy interface) and 2.0 comands can be updated to accept this system. The beauty if thuis system is that if you change your cell you just need to buy a new cradle and Mercedes supports nearly all new style ohones less for iphone and blackberry. As for analogue to digital conversion well this really depends onwhether you have an a d2b system or the older harness system. If you have a d2b then all you need is the components mentioned above to convert. If you have the older harness system you will have to rip it out as the antenna etc will not work) and fit a standalone with seperate speaker. Hope this helps, there is a great guy in Germany who supplies all of the components required to fit the d2b systems to mercedes and oh before I forget, all later (2002 onwards) cars had the d2b system regardless of whether comand was fitted (so aps10, 30 , audio 10cd etc) and these to can be expanded to accept the telephone. |
