Thumbs up Stereo System Replacement in 300E is Complete!

Thanks for all of your help guys! Many of you have helped with my stereo replacement on my 90 300E without even knowing it! I have used the information posted in other messages to help me get through rough spots of this installation. As well as direct answers from others.

Good Information makes ALL the difference!

Here is what I have done. I have replaced the broken Becker cassette head unit with a Kenwood 2019 AM/FM CD. A very nice head unit that has good power at a great price point. I have replaced the front speakers with Boston Accoustics 4" co-ax. I have replaced the rears with Boston Accoustics 5 1/4 co-ax. These speakers fit pretty well without any cutting needed and their height is low enough to replace the factory grills. I ran new monster cable to each speaker, bypassing the original console fader.

This plays well but due to the size of the speakers...there is not much low-end at all.

After having read many reports in this forum regarding sub-woofer boxes in the trunk...and their varying degrees of ineffectiveness, I decided to look for a small self-contained, self-powered unit that I could keep inside the car.

Amazingly enough, I found a perfect fit! It is made by Kenwood and it is called the WooX. It's model number is KSC-WA62RC. It has filled the bill perfectly! It is no Mega-Watt thumper...but it gives me the low end that was missing and adds a bit of thump.

The best part is the fit. I removed the lid for the First-Aid Kit and put the kit itself in the trunk.

With the lid removed the sub fits neatly between the headrests and is low enough that it is not even seen in the rear-view mirror when looking out the back! And I must say it looks pretty cool sitting there on the back deck!

It even has a wired remote that I ran up to the center console that allows me to control how much low end I get. (You can over power it..These woofers are still pretty small)

I used information from this forum to help me get through the back seat wall and then run the cables up the passenger side to up behind the glove box. From there is was a snap to finish the install. I did this all myself over a Saturday and I hit lots of snags that took me a while to get over. But looking back..it was really not that difficult..If you know the tricks. And the whole thing is pretty cost effective too....All told I have less than $750 in the entire system.

I have learned a lot about my 300 in doing this and will be happy to share as others have shared with me. I hope this will help others with their projects!

Thanks Again!
Steve

Just an additional note

With the little sub up there...I rattles the light in the rear window. So a small piece of stick on velcro (the fuzzy side) to the outside edges of the light in between the glass stops the problem nicely!

4"BA's

How do the 4" BA's (front dash) sound compared to the factory units?

4" Fronts

Hi there..
The BA's soung very good. I will have a hard time answering your question though as sound system was toast when I gost the car. But others I have heard, these sound much more brilliant than the factory units. But I think they suffer from lack of low end. Thus the need for the small sub-woofer. Makes the system very nice.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. I'm looking for front dash speakers that will provide more mid.
